savage 24s 22mag and 20ga

i traded for the combo at the last gun show, forearm was missing the screw holding the forend iron.  I didn't realize the rifle was chambered in 22 mag. I just  you know  ass summed it was 22lr.  Anyhow i get home and start removing light rust and crud from the outside and just crud from the bores and the inside is like new.  Would you belive I have no 22 mag ammo, after almost 50 yrs of shooting no 22mag? long story short trip to the big box store and home with some win 45 gr plated ammo.  sight in @ 30yds. shooting iron sights first shots are 3" low move the sight up a few steps and i'm in the middle of the 1"black. cool- load remmington 20ga slug bang 1" to right and perfect elevation shoot one more and it cuts the same hole  2x cool. load # 7.5 fine shot winchester load -bang pattern is centered on the 1" black.  the noise you are hearing clop, clop is me dancing, this is the first 22mag i have ever owned(I never could convince myself the mag could kill something the lr couldn't) price of ammo is another reason, boy thought i was buying high-power centerfire.
I have one other savage 24 that shoots almost as good  a .223 and 20ga.  I plan on using this combo this yr. to maybe shoot a hog  22mag for head shots and slug for well you know! bill439

your a brave man.    When I am out looking for hogs by myself, I carry a 12ga/30-06 combo with the 12 ga loaded with 3 inch buckshot with a .44 mag for backup.

Doug's right, you shouldn't use the gun for hogs.  And the ammo is too expensive.  You need to drop what you are doing and sell it to me for $100.00 (I'm feeling generous tonight, usually I offer $50.00!)

Also, that combination might be very powerful for coyote, fox, bobcat etc.

    Bill,   dougk is right.  Sight in the 22 Mag at about 75 yards for a standing still or distance shot and load the 20 with some heavy shot in case they come in close or are running.  It works every time on them varmints.

gosh! I never knew I had so many friends that gave a #$%$# about my well-being.  To put to rest any real harm that I may endure, I will be shooting from a 16' tree stand @ 35yds from a corn feeder.  I have killed several hogs of Russian desent, one with 7mag, one with 444marlin, and all others with 30-06.  I have to report none of the hogs made it to the top of the tree.  I am thinking that the 22mag with a solid bullet should reach the brain and the 20ga slug should be very effictive to take out the lungs/heart.  I thank my friends for the good advise you all have given and thank you for thinking of my safety.  My plan is to take a small hog, maybe 100-125 lbs. and have what is called in Louisiana a cou-shan-de-lait(I don't think I spelled it right) cook the whole thing on a pit made for this purpose.  I have cooked in the past several whole deer the same way, except wrap the deer in bacon.  After it was over it looked like a elephant graveyard--nothing but bones!!! good point about the tree stand.  That makes a lot of sense plus you have the 20 ga slug. 

My reference is stalking the hogs from the ground, when there is no wind I have been in the middle of 30 hogs of varying sizes.  For this application I always use a 30-06 with 3 inch 00 buck.  the 3 inch 00 buck has 14 pellets vs 9 in the 2 3/4 inch shell.

How do you cook in a cou-shan-de-lait?

Doug, my son and I built a pit out of chanel iron, angle iron for the frame and top and then covered top and bottom part with alum. sheeting.  expanded metal was used for the bottom to hold the charcol or wood and we made a frame out of 1" steel tubing with expanded metal on both sides to hold the hog. The hog is spread open and is held on the tubing frame swamiched between the two pieces of expaanded metal  with wire the frame is held by the ends of the bottom part of the pit and supports the hog off the bed of coals and is rotated once every hour.  We add additional coals to the fire when we rotate the pig, takes about 5 hrs to cook a 100-130lb. pig.  the pit is aprox. 40" x 64" and 36" tall, top is about 24" tall and matches the size of the pit. (the top has to be removed in order to put the pig on or rotate when cooking.  When everything is together it looks like a big box made out of alum. 5' long 5'high and 3' wide.  oh one more thing the bottom is open and the expanded metal that holds the coals is held about 6" off the ground.  When cooking a pig or deer or whatever it is a great chance to drink beer and scotch while the the meat cooks. Also gives you a chance to tell the friends how the meat on the pit got there.  Good luck, bill439

that sounds like a great way to cook the meat I am sure the meat is fantastic....  I might try something like that but with a smaller 50lb hog this fall...

Damn, Pastorp you sure you never did one of these?  a deer that will dress 65 - 80 lbs will take 3 1/2 to 4 lbs of bacon.  A deer hind quarter can be done the same way.  We stuff onions and garlic into the meat at different points and inject liquid seasoning before wraping in bacon.  This will help the meat from drying out.  Note: any leftover meat can be pulled from the bones and heated in a Microwave the next day with bbq sauce for the best deer or pork you ever had.  The last deer I did we had about 30 folks show up and some of those didn't eat, so had plenty of meat the next day.  Best of luck, Bill439

HEY BILL 439---THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPES OF SAVAGE 24 IN 20 OR 410 GA OVER 22LR OR 22MAG.LOTS OF THESE WILL LET YOU INTERCHANGE BARRELS.THE  1ST THING TO DETERMINE IS THE TYPE OF EXTRACTOR YOU HAVE--NEW TYPE (FLAT) OR OLD TYPE(ROUND)
THE ABSOLUTE BEST EVER (IN MY OPINION) HOG GUN EVER MADE IS THE SAVAGE 24 IN 20GA/357MAXIMUM.IT WILL DO THINGS TO HOGS YOU WON'T BELIEVE.I LIVE IN S.FLA AND THE HOGS ARE RUINING THE WOODS,SO I ALWAYS TAKE THIS COMBO TO THE WOODS WITH ME AND I ALWAYS BRING HOME THE BACON.IT MAKE SO MUCH SENSE I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW I HOG HUNTED BEFORE

flaflash, great to hear from you.  where I hunt we are having hog and bear problems you can't believe.  I have just returned from my camp yesterday, having to repair a corn feeder bears have torn up.  I shot my 22mag/20ga. while at the camp at 50yds.  22mag still on at 50 7/8" group, using 22wrf ammo at 50 1/2" group.  the 22wrf is the old ammo used in the old win. pumps.  shot some more remington slugs and at 50yds. they are about 2" to the right and dead on elevation,  good enough for me.  The really cool thing about this little rig is it shoots both mag and wrf to the same point 25 - 50 yds.  fine shot will center the bull at 25yds.  By the way, this gun is what i carried when doing the repair work on my feeder yesterday.  I have other combo's but this little gun is a joy to carry and shoot.  Almost forgot, before i went to my camp I installed a bbl. sling swivel and swivel stud in the buttstock. got to have that when you're dragging something out.  Best of luck with the pigs, bill439
