Broadhead targets ??
« on: September 12, 2010, 08:26:49 PM »
I am going to buy a new broadhead target and was wanting to hear what everyone thinks is the best. Which one do you have?  I want one that will last a long time, it has to have easy arrow removal and i like to shoot field points in it also.
My biggest fear is ( when I'm dead) my wife will sell my hunting stuff for what I said i paid for it.

Well to be honest, I really haven't found any one to be great with both field points and broadheads. I usually shoot my field points into one of the bag type targets, like this one,

What ever you do don't shoot any broadheads into this type target, least wise any you want back or unless you feel like filleting the target open like you see the holes in mine to get them out.

I usually use one of the American Whitetail King targets for my broadhead shooting only as the field pointed arrows will not hardly come out of it.

This said, when I do limited shooting of both as in tuning or simply to check out how well a BH might fly I use one of the Block targets like this,

The Block pictured here was pretty new then, but now is going on it's third year, and I do admit that there are a couple of places it has been shot up pretty well by BH's, but overall if you spread the places you shoot out similar to what I have done with the earplugs, you will find that they all will last much longer.

I agree.  There is not best target for both.  I use the yellow jacket broadhead only target for broadheads.  Affordable, and it does the job for broadheads. I think I paid $50.  They are $70 if you do not get them on sale.  You can not use field tips, or you will loose the field tip inside it.   Take a look at this test on youtube.  I do not shoot a ton of broadheads.  I use enought to ensure I am hitting where I need to.  Most of my shooting is with field points into 3d Targets.
The layered targets get torn up with broadheads very quickly, and may not stop your arrow after a dozen shots in the same area.

I make my broadhead targets from compressed carpet foam, as its free from most if not all carpet companies.  Once cut and layered, I use two 2x4's on top, a sheet of plywood cut at the bottom for flatness along with two other 2x4's then sit on top and tie off a rope for the large bale type targets.

Here is one I put together with the interlocking foam that you can find a 6 pack of at Walmart or Kmart for around $20  After I test them, then I have large plastic covers for them, and they work shot after shot after shot.

I started out using bales of hay (free here on the farm)with painted bullseye then moved up to the block and for what you pay for a block the hay did just as well and your not out anything.

I have never found a good target for broadheads. I went through 2 shotblockers this year. Tried making a homemade
layered foam target, 4'x3' as long as you moved around on it it was fine 8-10 shots in a 2-3" spot they'd start going through,
and you had to flop it over and stand on it to pull them. (more time retrieving than shooting). Wore out a Glendale full rut in a couple
months, a Block just as fast. Came to the conclusion just buy 2 or 3 every year a call it part of the expense of shooting broadheads.
I have an old bag target for field points that I just shove in a new burlap bag every year, lay it on the ground stomp it a few times
good as new.
