I don't know if all those gems of wisdom were Ronald Reagan originals, but he said them and I believe he tried to live up to them.  I have to wonder what sayings the present occupant of the White House will be remembered for.

"We are the ones we've waited for."  Nothing else comes to mind right now and it isn't worth any further thought.

Reagan had lots of sayings.  I used to listen to his 2 minute or 5 minute comments on the radio back in th 70's.  This was before talk radio.  He would tell a little story and relate it to politics, and have one of these sayings.  He was originally an FDR democrat, but in his traveling around the country, talking to moms and pops in hotels, restaurants, gas stations, etc, he converted to conservativism.

Lets remember a few things about how Reagan did things. I think many current conservatives would blast a democrat and possibly a republican if they interacted with Gorbachev the way Reagan did. Remember that Reagan took a very firm stance against the USSR but interacted in a very friendly way with Gorbachev. Reagan said "Gorbachev is a man I can deal with" or something like that. It was kind of like hate the sin but love the sinner. That may have been a big part of his success. Reagan was very diplomatic and did stand firm on his core beliefs but always had an ear for other opinions and would negotiate and compromise at times. I also believe that current conservatives would have blasted Nixon for opening relations with China.

I don't know if they would blast Nixon or not.  I am extremely conservative.  However, I wouldn't mind talking with leaders of foreign nations, but I wouldn't give the country away for doing it.  Not many people know this, but the reason Nixon went to China was to nip a potential war between Russia and China that would have involved nuclear weapons.  China was claiming Russian territory in Siberia and had moved troops to the border.  Russia turned 1/4 of their nuclear missles toward China.  Russia could not have fought a conventional war with them, not enough troops.  China moved all their nuclear facilities from Outer Mongolia to Tibet.  Both were massing troops, weapons, and having border clashes.  So, Nixon made the trip to China to open relations.  Somehow this calmed China down and they quit demanding Russian Territory.  Some on Nixons staff said that if they had a nuclear exchange, the fallout would reach the US via the jet stream.  He didn't want this to happen.
