cast bullets in 223 ultralight barrel
« on: October 03, 2010, 04:18:27 PM »
It took most of a year to get the Lee special order 22 cavity bullet mold from Midsouth, but the wait looks to have been worthwhile. I cast up a bunch, applied liquid alox, and installed gas checks. They were then seated over SR4759. The Chrony said they were going about 2600 fps.
In the first pic, you can see they are sort of a "dumb" looking little bullet, and they make the 223 look like it belongs on the short bus.
But, the second picture shows 5 shots in a 2 inch square. This is just a first effort, no attempt to fine tune has yet been made. I'm happy !

Nice.  Looks like it'd make a spectacular download bullet for small game too.  8)

That's pretty fast bet if you slowed them down a little they would shoot a lot better, just guessing.

Nice, I want one of those molds! That is a nice group for first time loadings, ;D  Couple questions;

Did you hafta run them through a sizer or are they straight outa the mold?

What kind of alloy did you have for the casting?
found elsewhere

Yes, I was surprised that the velocity was so high. Subsequent groups of the same load have been less accurate. As soon as I shoot up what I have loaded already, I will reduce the charge, maybe try H4895.

The alloy is WW metal (4lbs.) with a little stick-on lead (4 oz.). I sized the bullets with a Lee .224 sizing die, and used Lee Liquid Alox to tumble lube them before and after sizing. The gas checks came from Hornady, and the Lee die installs them quite handily. Ready to load, they weigh about 52.5 grains.

Casting, lubing, sizing, and loading bullets this small isn't easy. I can't even see the bullets without my reading glasses on !
