Handi 18" in a 45/70?
« on: October 01, 2010, 02:05:29 PM »
I was surfing and found a "Ultra Lite" 18" barreled 45/70 Handi rifle said the weight was 4.75#, now my mind doesn't quite get around this as it seems that the re- coil would cause you to develop a bad 'Flinch" in just a little while. Isn't this just a little light for a 45/70? By the way I lost the link but it was a internet gun shop they wanted $279 for it.

My 45/70 shorty, which is a couple of pounds heavier than the one you found, bits hard with a stiff load so I would think the gun you saw advertised with a Ruger #1 load might leave a scar or two on your forehead. ;D

Tom, I gotta disagree with ya.  I don't think barrel length, weight, etc. has all that much to do with it in a shortie .45-70.  Yeah, it's gonna kick a little harder cause the barrel's not there for weight, but mine will shoot about any load I want to try......without denting my forhead.  It's a go to, gotta love rifle.  Perhaps I'm a glutton for punishment, but I'd buy it.  The worst you could do is part it out and sell it here.

Now that I think about it, my .45-70 hasn't barked in a month or two....time to drag her out.  She's not deer hunting this year, so I've kinda neglected her.  We're supposed to be out after bear, but that's not working either.  It seems I either fall apart or my equipment does just when I need to hunt.  Just now, it's horses getting out and a tractor not running.  Sometimes I think a rocker on the front porch of the old soldier's home might work.

Pete,

I probably wasn't clear, I think the recoil is a gun weight issue.  A 45/70 under 5#s is going to be handful with a stiff load.

How come the Missus isn't wrenching on the tractor and wrangling the horses so you can go chase Yogi? ;D

Tommy, you're bad....gonna get me in trouble with the squaw.  Ya ever had knives and tomahawks chucked at ya?  If she really gets ticked off, It might be a .54 Hawken.

Tom, You and I both like shorties.  I think we're both in the same ballpark when we say "Yes, they're lighter and going to kick more".  But I think we both still love them.

Sounds like it may be a Talo SB2-47T, has an 18¾" barrel, wood stock, with sights, H&R has never made an "Ultra Lite", they've made Superlights, compacts and youth, but not in 45-70, the weight sounds suspicious, the SB1-44T 44mag version is listed as weighing 6lbs.

My 12ga shorty weighs just under 5 lbs. with a 2.5x20 scope on it... if you think your 45-70's kick you should grab ahold of this one and rip a few 3" slugs through it. :o

Spanky,

Your shorty 12 sounds like fun.  I love to plink with buckhammers in my 12 ga, so I know the feeling.  :o

I know this thread is going a little off course, and I hate to admit to being a dummy, but I know all about being tagged in the noggen by a so-called "long eye relief" scope on a light weight 12 shooting 3-inch slugs.  Result: stiches.

I like to use a 2.5x20 Simmons on my hard kicking brush guns. It is light and mounts ahead of the hammer. I usually buy 'em from ebay for dirt cheap money and they work pretty good for woods guns.

Oh yeah, its gonna kick all right. Question is, how do YOU handle recoil? The methods to help tame it are in the FAQs and would probably make it manageble. As for perspective, consider the BIG caliber African dbl rifles and their kick. FWIW, I wouldnt be surprised if NFG has some recoil figures close at hand to compare this notion and those classics. I suspect the Handi will appear pretty anemic........
