Hammer broke!!
« on: October 13, 2010, 08:38:26 AM »
I was out shooting my 30-30 handi a little while ago... I took a shot with it and the end of the hammer broke off!! I've never had that happen before. About 3/8" of the hammer just snapped right off when it hit the transfer bar. If I ever decide to scope it I guess I won't have to worry about hammer clearance. :-\  This is the first time I've ever had anything break on one of my handi's.

Spanky, Ya gotta remember ta look at da bright side a tings.  Da action time'll be faster. ;D ;D  I ken send ya some fence wire or balein twin ta fix er.  Seriously that is strange.  You're saying only about 3/8 of the hammer spur itself broke off.  I've got to believe H&R would send you a new one.  Tim's super duty epoxy.....forget the name.....I forget my own ::)  may fix it, but I would still get H&R to replace it.  It had to have been flawed.

What is the vintage of that action, Spanky?
I had one come undone on a .44Mag Shikari way back. It appeared to be a sintered metal part. I had nothing to lose so I brazed all the pieces back together (that was tricky!) and it worked fine.

I'll have to double check the year of it when I get home. I just reshaped it some with my dremel because it was sharp as heck.  I definitely wont have scope clearance issues now that's for sure. I'll take some pics to show how much of it broke off... I don't have the broken piece... it went flying somewhere. I've never taken a handi frame apart before but I guess it's time to learn. Where is the best place to buy a new hammer?

Several members have had broken hammers, but always the sear notch, not the spur!!  :o H&R won't send a hammer, it needs to be fitted, but they should replace it if you send it in, they may even cover shipping if it's a factory fitted barrel.  ;)

Spanky, didn't Tim warn you about making those fine adjustments with claw hammers? You just gotta take it easy with your smith work, OK?

I didn't think a couple whacks would hurt anything.. :D :D ;D
I can't really complain... I bought this 30-30 quite a while back and I've never had a problem with it... it's a great shooter and I wouldn't part with it. Maybe it's trying to tell me it wants to be scoped and it just decided to bob it's own hammer. :D :-\

Sorry for taking this thread off topic, but as my last name is Hammer, I saw the title of this thread and thought it was indeed a newspaper headline that described my life.  ;D
