My club has a gun bash this weekend, 40 various firearms in the raffle, assorted knives and other stuff in side raffles, good eats and cold beer all afternoon. Should be fun. Then Sunday I need to get the boat hauled out and begin clean up for winter. No hunting yet, too much other stuff going on.

Im leaving tomorrow in the early AM for Wyoming for a annual hunting trip for antelope. Our group of 4 has 14 tags to fill in 5 days, I will be doing a lot of meat processing because we get our animals cut up and in the frezzer usually with in a couple hours of the kill, because of the warm temps.
After I get back to Oh I will start bowhunting and working to finish my 410/ 44 rifled slugun that I have been brain storming and working with another GBO mamber that lives near me.
I have the gun shooting now but need time to develope a load that feeds well and shoots accurately,
it is a M 500 Mossberg 410 pump that I have made a 20" 44 cal. barrel for and milled the receiver with dovetail cuts to mount the rings and scope to.  Will have more on this and pics soon.     Jed

Better weekend than the Steelers had! ;D

410 slug update, 310 grain LWNGC, 2" group @ 100 yards, only 2 shots didn't load many.  No velocity, hope to chrony these in a week or two.  Based upon the POI at 50 yards and 100 yards velocity probably similar to a slower 12 ga sabot slug, 1400 to 1500 is my guess.  Gun does NOT sound like my father's 410. :o

Finally got back to my 410 slug gun project and have it about ready to go.  I parkerized the barrel and magazine tube and put it back together this past weekend.
While shooting it and trying to find a accurate load for it I found that you can always learn more about what makes a gun shoot or not shoot.
I thied some 240 gr. SWC hardcast some 270 gr. GCHP cast , Hornady 240 gr. XTP HP and 265 gr. FP bullets and a bunch of powders from very slow AA 8700  to Ramshot  Enforcer ( fastest ) and many others in between in burn rate.
Some groups were so bad that I could not consistently I could not hit a 2' X 3' piece of cardboard at 100 yards ? I finally found 1 load that showed promise shooting around 2"  3 shot groups at 100 yards that using new Cheddite primed cases 24 grs. of Enforcer and seating the bullets 240 gr. XTP's by hand into the hull and letting the nose protrude.  This morning was a nice windless conditions and I shot this  group at 100 yards and its nearer to 1 1/2".  I have not chronied this load yet but I dont like using the 240 XTP HP at anything over 1600 FPS.
I have killed a bunch of deer with this bullet but have seen it fail and fall apart a couple of times also at higher velocity shot from muzzleloaders shooting 150 grs. loads.
The gun is a Mossberg M 500 410 ga.  I made the barrel from a blank I bought from Numrich and turned it and milled it to fit and lock up with the bolt, Its 44 cal. .429 dia. with a 1 in 18" twist and 20" long.

The scope is a old Weaver all steel K 1.5  the receiver of the Mossberg had plenty of thickness so I milled the dovetail cuts right into the receiver and kept the scope low to the bore,  The butt stock I made from laminated hard maple and painted it .
I will be using this this year in Ohio for deer gun season.   Jedman

Nice Job Jed!

I have shot his 410 pump slug gun and it is very nice.  Now I have to try and buy up his non-performing 270 grain HPGCs because they where shooting 1 ragged hole @ 50 yards in my H&R 410 rifled slug gun.   ;D

Good luck to all this gun season and stay safe.

BTW, deer all over the place in the Zaleski State Forest last week.  Please hunt at Zaleski opening day and drive a couple of them critters my way. ;)

Last 2 Sat. I was crossbow hunting at our gunclub. Not many of us hunt and its 250 acres  ;D
My goal is something bigger or more atypical than the pair of 10 point bucks I have taken over the past several years. I saw a young, small 8 pt. last Sat. at 25 yds. and was tempted but decided to let him grow up some more.  Never did that before!  I have seen does on this spot a number of times so I know I am in a good place. A pair of small does the week before within 25 yds. never saw me either in my pop up ground blind. Rut is not really on here yet but it should start any time now.

Good luck to everyone and be safe.

Jal5,    I live in NW Ohio within a few miles of Oak Openings park and the Maumee State Forest together they cover many thousands of acres and beleive me the rut is on now.
I drive these areas daily and walk my dog in the areas of the park off limits to hunting several times a week and have been seeing plenty of activity.
From your post it tells me you are mostly after trophy deer, Thats fine and I was once more of a trophy hunter myself.
I now take as many animals as I can, Since I have heart disease and the red meat of game is more healthy, I try to fill my freezers with as much game as I can. I have 5 antelope in the freezer now from ahunting  trip last month and leave this weekend for a full week of bowhunting in Knox, Holmes, and Cochocton counties, I now hunt with a crossbow. When I started bowhunting back in the early 1970's I would only see a few other hunters in the woods and now its so competitive it's hard to find untrampled areas to hunt.
There are many more deer here in Ohio now than at any other time so I just put in as much time as I can in the woods and the law of averages makes for that chance of a trophy still a possibility.
Good Luck to all this year !!  Jed

Jed- strange but we are not seeing much activity here in Jefferson Co. area yet. That buck Sat. wasn't even slightly interested in the scent wicks I had out, he was just passing by and eating.  Same thing on my friends farm last week, he saw a bunch of does but the bucks weren't aggressively following just were there as usual.

I am not really a trophy hunter per se, but I have been in the habit of letting lesser bucks walk to grow up another day as part of a game management plan on my friend's farm. I regularly harvest does for the freezer each year. It is much less important to me now to only get a buck.  I try to set a challenge for myself each year too, one year it was to take one with a new slug gun I had set up a single shot, another year it was to take one with the muzzleloader for the first time, and this year its to get one with my pistol. Keeps it interesting.
