Jimster: You have read all 1,990 pages of the healthcare law?  If you have, I am truly impressed.  Based on your comments you seemed to have missed a few points.

This kind of sums it all up. If you can understand this, you can understand that anything this government does is not for our benefit. There are a lot of people that are buffaloed into thinking otherwise. This bill that they call health care, is just another route to remove more of our freedom, and if some government agent deems you unworthy of health care because he says you are no longer useful to society. Your freedom won't be the only thing you could lose.
This same unGodly idea was crammed into Hilliary's health care bill. You just had to read the fine print.

Without seeing more information than what posted (not exactly an unbiased website) I think this may be somewhat misrepresented like the supposed "health death panel" was. Besides my Blue Cross Blue shield plan does a lot of this already along with other insurance companies.

SwampThing:  Are you in hospital finance?  I didn't say medicare reimbursement isn't a big part of hospital revenue, just that the hospital only recovers 45% of the charges.  Medicare will only pay a set amount on a service rendered.  Charity care may have been the wrong choice of words.  If it isn't classified as charity care, it is simply written off as a loss.  All hospitals do not have the same financial situation.  I don't claim to be a font of knowledge on the intracacies of hospital finance, but my wife is.   She has been  a hospital CFO for 10 years and the clinics and  hospital are doing $700 million in revenue a year.    I would like to tell you that you would be  welcome to debate her on the details but she is too busy to waste her time on internet chat.  And I would have to live with her screaming about your mentality.

Do I owe you for my education?  In the past I have always had to pay tuition.

Powderman:  You are right that those who have insurance pay more because of those that can't pay and because Medicare has low reimbursement payments.  It is just like I pay more for a shirt because of retail theft loss at a store.  I understand your anger about the $35 tylenol.  Where I live hospitals are required by law to post their room rates.  Rate increases have to announced in the media.  When my wife took her current job, the practice had been to charge a low room rate and then charge exorbitant charges for things like tylenol.  I don't think that is right and it sure causes a person to be upset.

Pass Lake, I have spent 14 years in healthcare finance, and I have personally done everything from Medicare/Medicaid to selfpay collections.  I know the big picture, and trends across the country.  As for your wife, she and I would probably agree on many things.   My issue was with you and your statements, which are hearsay at best, because your information is secondhand..  

You do not owe me for your education.   Consider my explanation of the big picture as an information contribution.

Swampman:  My wife has corrected me.  At her hospital,  it is 30% that  receive charity care. The remaining 70% are turned over to a collection agency.  The hospital receives on average only 25% of what the collection agency is able to collect.  They collect 10% from their unisured patients.  Which causes me to pay higher insurance rates and pay more for hospital services.  And we don't need to change health care?

It doesnt matter what gets passed or how, we will be the loosers in the end. Look at the social security fiasco that is going on right now. They are afraid we will run out of money to support it. Why will we run out of money. Would the hundreds of Loans the government has taken out of it and never repaid have something to do with it. Robbing Peter to pay Paul just ends Peter in the poor house and Paul owing a lot of gambling debts to Vito. Taking your last dime and betting on Sloe Gin at the racetrack isnt a good investment. Government is a scam, Government is corrupt, All Government Politicians are thieves and crooks, they just have more money than the average criminal so they are able to stay out of jail.
