Wildhill Preserve in Vermont questions
« on: July 16, 2009, 05:42:41 AM »
Been years close to 30 since I hunted there ;) I just sent them a email about a boar hunt the beginning of September. I will be using a revolver and my daughter a 44 mag levergun with a  scout scope . I'm thinking a 250 grain hard cast GC slug with enough AA#9 to do the job with the lever gun. Since both of us will need to get up close, do they charge the full amount if we don't take a animal? I also see they "highly discourage" the use of a levergun due to safety problems. Will it be a problem showing up with one? Any TV there? Finally ,are they friendly to female hunters ? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Smacky,

A lever gun should not be a problem at all.  If you do not take an animal, they will only charge you for the daily room and board, about $100/day I think.  No TV al all.  They electricity is generated by a gas generator and by a turbine.  When I was there last year they were wiring for lights fed via the turbine.  They use the gas generator for the dishwasher, and other appliances.  September is a great time to go, you'll see all kinds of animals!!!

Please have a look at my pics to get acquainted with the place.

I figured drdougrx would be the guy to answer ;D I posted last fall or so about Wildhill and not only did you answer my questions but invited my daughter and I for your winter hunt in 2008. Well it kind of fell apart due to scheduling. So here we are again. I sent my deposit for the two of us, the first week of September. Being that this is my daughters first hunt, we need to outfit her. Weather wise at that time what do you clothes wise? I figure lightweight gortex boots, not so sure about the rest. Heavy parker or light weight jacket?  Thanks

Hey Smacky,

You're always invited!!  We had a very nice time...if S.B. or six_gunz wants to weigh in, please be my guest.

September in VT is generally comfortable.  Early in the month it's in the 70s and later 60's and really nice.  Evenings require a lite jacket maybe.  As far as clothes.....Jeans and T and anykind of non-insulated boot or even a good running shoe will work I suspect as long as its dry.  Bugs should be non-existant as well.  I wouln't get too hung up on equipment.  A pair of binos, camera, snacks for the evening and for after dinner.

You'll have a great time.

Had a great time at Wildhill. My daughter took a nice boar with her Marlin 1894P. I got a sow with my Reeder 510 Hunter revolver. The weather was beautiful and there were about a dozen or so hunters in camp who were great guys.  Seems like this will be a annual hunt  ;D So far we had sausage and pulled pork[a rump roast cooked in a crock pot} very good eats!!

wouldn't call it camp food either. i think i found a piece of meat in my ketchup chile.food was the absolute cheapest stuff they could find on the shelf. no brand name anything.  breakfast------ egg mcmuffin one whole one for each of us  boy will fill you up,
lunch was great with those yummy pb+j  sandwiches..
maybe they could crank up the grill and cook some real food=== you can buy cheap cuts of meat. marinade them for a couple of days and make them taste darn good===== pork ribs you can buy cheap enough. we are hunters and need food that will fill our bellies
not heres you pbj sandwich and milk have a good hunt

WoW Java....been there, what 10-12 times and never had PB&J....had pork roast, chicken, baked ham, elk chili, buffalo burgers, eggs and boar sausage w taters, blueberry and apple pancakes...

I don't doubt what you said (really..all I can do is shake my head and be dissapointed)...and...I know there was a time in the 1990's before the boys were there that things went kinda downhill....it's not like that now or at least in the past 10 years.....sorry you had this experience.....
