Ruger Mini 30 for deer
« on: October 07, 2010, 08:23:36 PM »
I know that 7.62x39 will take deer like a 30-30.  I am thinking of getting a new Ruger mini 30 for deer hunting here in Middle Georgia. MOST shots will be under 100 yards, But, (there is always a BUT), I might have to stretch it out 200 yards or heaven forbid 300 yards. I know that is a VERY long shot for the Caliber.  Just some thought.  ???

ive got a ruger bolt that ive taken deer with and have a ar15 chambered in it that will probably be my primary hunting gun this deer season. The longest ive shot a deer is about 125 yards with one. Im sure it will do the job out to 200 but 300 is really pushing the envelope. Keep in mind that both of my will shoot moa with loads they like and probably could make hits out that far and probably have enough steam to get it done at 300 yards but your on the borderline. I had a mini 30 and if yours is anything like mine its not going to be accurate enough to shoot much past a 100 yards on live game.

I had a mini 30, a SKS and a Saiga in 762X39.  I traded off the Mini as both other guns shot better and were a whole lot less expensive.  I got a nice Marlin 1894 in .44 mag for the Mini and am happy with the trade.

from the way it sounds from a few reviews ive seen online the new mini 30 tactical is a pretty decent shooter.

I plan on picking one up, I had a Mini years ago, loved it, but it was not a very good shooter.

Good luck

I just p/u a used 189series and am going to load it up with hornady 123gr sp and possibly take it out this year depending on how it shoots factory federal shoots about 1 3/4" @ 50 with iron sights but I may scope it. They are a fun gun though.

I shot deer with the mini 30 and it works fine at "woods" ranges.  It's WAY TOO HEAVY for the power of that little cartridge, though.   There are lots better choices for the money, like a CZ 527 if you want the 7.62X39, and that's WAY more accurate that a standard mini.  Even a 742 carbine in 30-06 is lighter & hits harder.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

Myself I have plenty of options to pick here at home but when I get a new (to me) rifle I like to break it in on a hunt.
