Fore end Lug Troubles with Handy Gun II
« on: October 05, 2010, 09:23:56 AM »
I have and old Handy Gun II with 20 Ga. & .22 Hornet barrels, and I have a problem with the 20 Gauge barrel, in that the Fore End has come off again. I had it resoldered buy a gunsmith after it came off the first time, and now it has snapped off again.

So my question is, would it be OK to have it TIG welded to the barrel instead of Silver Soldered ?

How are the fore end lugs attached on the big boomer Handi Rifles ?  Do they use a dirrefent type of lug, or attachement ?

TIA

Run some water through the barrel to keep the barrel cool and have someone TIG weld it.

we have tig welded the screw lugs on before on older barrels....
we have access to aluminum hollow thin wall pipe of different sizes to use as a heat sink
to take the heat away from the barrel.
spot tack is all you need in front and back... no complete passes.
works good on these handi's and very good on the one hole rugers.
my son even done a nickle argentine double rifle.. and it turned out mighty fine ;D
as far as the nickle is concerned... you might want to find some to practice on first.
being a shotgun barrel and the weld is hidden by the forend....go for it !!!
watch tha heat.... ;)

I've epoxied two of them on Handi barrels, still working fine.  ;) IMO if silver solder didn't work, the barrel and stud weren't prepped well.  ;)

I have drilled and tapped the barrels and attached them with two 6-48 screws along with a good epoxy and have never had any trouble.

Bulletslap, I reread your post and noticed it was your shotgun barrel. I would only D&T a rifle barrel for this as the shotgun tubes are too thin.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Thank you all for your help, I forgot to mention that this was a electroless nickel barrel.  I suspect that it wasn't prepped correctly the first time the factory did it, or the second time I had it repaired.

Forend stud detachment is a not so uncommon issue on modern Handis, they're just resistance welded on.  :-\

Bulletslap,

The lug came off the barrel of my friend's Handi Gun II, Nickel plated 357 barrel.  This happened last summer, while it was on loan to me of course. :P  Anyway, I had the lug TIG welded back on and it shot the same as before.  Which BTW was good with jacked bullets and no good with cast.  I would think the heat from welding would have less potential to impact the performance of a smoothbore SG barrel than a rifle barrel.

I had that happen years ago with my first Handy Gun II (nickle plated barrel/receiver). I had a talented friend make a thin, flat barrel band fixture with the screw lug welded to that. Just a teeny bit of relieving the forend was required, and it shot as accurately as it had before the break.
