Question on cleaning Drilling
« on: October 16, 2010, 03:32:56 PM »
I just received my Fortuna model 30 drilling made in 1964.  I always clean my guns before using them.  Normally I use Fritz to clean the blued barrels and receiver.  Is this to harsh?  Should I use Kroil?  Or something else on the barrels, receiver and wood?

thanks
Doug

I'd push a patch through the rifle bbl. just to make sure it doesn't have a lot of oil in it from the last owner.

After that, the only thing you absolutely "need" to do, is to clean off the hinge pin, and put a film of EP rated grease on it.  Keep the grease clean by wipeing it off OFTEN and adding new.  Any kind of EP rated grease is better than no grease, but i use automotive synthetic grease on mine.

The rest of the gun gets cleaned with a rag with a light film of Break Free on it.  I use my drilling all year around, so it doesn't get a lot of bbl cleaning other than fireing it.

Don't forget to rub some linseed oil into the stock now and then.

To prevent petroleum oil to destroy the stock behind the action, it it wise to place the gun with the muzzle downwards in the stand.
