New scope for Optima
« on: October 05, 2010, 04:33:53 AM »
Guys I am looking around for a scope for the new Optima. My stepdad offered me a Pentax, but it is a 56mm and like 4-20 power. I don't need a sniper scope on my ML. So here is what I am looking for and a few of my options.

- Low power
- Small obj. lense
- good optics
- lifetime warranty

Here are a couple of scopes I like:

- Leupold Ultralight 2.5x20mm
- Leupold VXI 1-4x20mm
- Leupold VXI 2-7x33mm
- Weaver Classic V 1-3x20mm
- Leupold VXII 1-4x20mm

I am really liking the Ultralight and the VXI 20mm's due to compact size and light weight. I know some guys want big lenses and I generally use 50 mm myself, but I want QR rings or bases and the ability to shoot in thick cover quickly. I won't take a shot over 150 yards ever with my ML, so I don't need 10X power. Do you guys think one of the scopes mentioned would do well on the Optima in Leupold QR bases and rings? I will keep the fiber optics on the rifle so I can hunt scope restricted areas at any time.

Thanks for the input.

I've used a Burris FF-II 2-7, & recently mounted a Leupold vari-x-III 1.75-6 on my Knight. I agree that for hunting with a M-L high power is usually not needed. I've seen vari-x-IIIs 1.75-6 go for just over $300 from private sellers. If you have time, lightly used is a good way to go. I got by fine for several years with my FF-II Burris. I just felt like upgrading to the Leupold I have not been using. I usually sight in dead on at 75 yrds or so & position myself for shots from 25-100 yrds(average).

Thanks. I will set zero for 75 also. That is why I am looking at the options I am. Whatever I end up getting will sit in Leupold QR bases and rings.

Well an update:

I am gonna have to pick up a CVA scope mount. I decided for this year I will use a Tasco World Class 44mm that I had extra to see if I use the 3-9 power or just use low power. I will make a final decision on the Optima's permanent optics after deer season. So until the end of February at least the Tasco will be on it.
