2- #1 causes the need to clean the rifle often, not a great attribute for a battle rifle.

3- Too many small parts to be cleaning the rifle in the field.

#2  - -Granted the AR's in NAM did a lot of jamming, but that was after the issue of (what I call dirty powder) ammo.

#3 - With todays black rifles and using clean burning powder in the ammo, it would take not a lot, but a whole lot of shooting thru those rifles before an absolute cleaning would be necessary.
If I got into a firefight that required me to shoot that much, I'd more than likely be killed anyway.

Besides that, when I was in Nam, I never heard anyone saying they needed to clean their M16.  Nor did I ever see a cleaning rod for an M16.  That said, I don't see a problem with the AR15 as a survival weapon.

A couple months I was shooting my AR every weekend and did not clean it the whole time.
I was shooting about 100 rounds a range session so figure about 1,000 rounds over the two months.
It was gunky when I did celan it.
Another time I was asked if a friend bought the ammo could his kid shoot my AR
I said sure.
He showed up with a flat of 500 rounds.
Not sure how the kid did it but I think he exceeded the cyclic rate of my gun.
He loaded the mags and shot all 500 rounds in less than an hour.
At one point I made him shoot a 22lr for a while while the rifle cooled.
I think I was the one that brought up cleaning.
My thinking was in Hawaii, were Team Nelson is or was at the time, and figured if he was walking the wet weather and sand is what you are going to clean out of the gun if you fall or have to swim a little to get around an obsticle.
Did I mention my 1,000 rounds earlier was in the desert of Southern CA and it was a hot and dusty two months at the range, I was shooting WOLF ammo that needs me to lube the rifle a lot and I was getting ready for three gun so I was in the dirt.
