I'm Jelious
« on: October 09, 2010, 10:51:34 AM »
Had a friend that lived up on the 40 mile river.  He met and married a woman from across the border.  They got married and bought a big chunk of land down river.  They built a cabin and moved.  Now they live in Canada, just a few miles down river from where he used to live, but across the border.  Now for $50.00 he can get a permit to hunt Bison every year.  Here in Alaska it's a drawing hunt.  I have been putting in for this hunt for 39 Years, and have yet to be drawn.  The Bison he hunts are differant, they are the Wood Bison.  Bigger than the Plans Bison we have here in Alaska.

Never heard of woods bison. Several folks around here raise them and I know these get to be over 2,000 lbs. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I don't think it's just bison.  Shortly after he got out of high school, my brother started dating a very rich girl.  Her family owned a few hundred acres of wooded land outside of a local town.  Now, looking back, the gal was EXTREMELEY good looking.  I'm talking supermodel level looks . . . and the only thing my brother talked about was how much hunting land he'd have if he ever settled down with her.  ;D

Sadly, it didn't work out. :)

Powderman:  The Bison you see in the US are Plaines Bison.  We think they are big, as they are the only Bison we have ever seen.  Wood Bison are one third again bigger than the Bison we have in Yellowstone.  There was not a lot of the Woods Bison in the US, and they were hunted out a long time age.  The Bison we see on the old Buffalo Nickels is a Woods Bison.  Wood Bison was the only Bison in Alaska.  They were hunted out by indiginous peoples about 150 years ago.  Alaska and the Federal Government transplanted a herd of Plains Bison to Alaska in the 1940s I believe.  Anyway that is the main Bison herd everyone in Alaska wants to hunt.  It is located in Delta Junction, south of Fairbanks.

Several Herds of Woods Bison survived up in North Western Canada.  They have been the basis for many reintroduction programs in Canada, and we are currently in the process of reintroducing them to Alaska.  We have a Small Herd we imported three years ago, being closely watched and used as a breeding population.  They are down in the Portage area.  From this herd we are planning on releasing them in the Mento Flats area.  They are so large they have no natural preditors.  Wolves and Bears could handle a baby, but Mama is too big and aggressive to mess with.  And Babies are usually kept within the close confines of the herd.  They can reach a shoulder height of over five feet and 2500 lbs.  They are the largest mammel in Canada and as far as I know in both North and South America.

Here are some Photos of Wood Bison I made last time I was in Canada:

SOURDOUGH. Thanks friend, I learned something today. One local farmer who raises them was badly gored several years ago. He had a small herd and was walking accross the feedlot when the bull took him. He was gored in the upper shoulder and the thigh. He said the bull tossed him so high in the air he didn't think he'd ever come down. he lost a lot of muscle tissue in his arm, shoulder, and thigh. He finally got away and out of the lot to safety. When EMS and police got there the first thing he said was, don't you touch my bull. He had done a very stupid thing. The bull had never been hostile before. That morning he had helped his son clean  and butcher a deer, he went in the lot, bull smelled blood, the rest is history. Thanks for the education. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Have often thought about moving to Canada.  I like the area around Calgary, Lethbridge, and Fort MacCloud.  Yes, I've been there during the winter.  Many of the people living in Alaska are from Canada.  They come here and work for years then retire back to Canada.  My neighbor's wife is a Canadian.  She is a nurse, she says she gets paid better in Fairbanks than she got paid in Windsor.

My son Skyler has spent so much time in Canada he has gotten to know the people.  He even talks like they do.  Sky has said numerous times he would like to move to Comox, on Vancouver Island.  I told him "Yes", I'll come to visit and we can go hunting togeather.  He then says "No Dad I'm not moving there just so you can go hunting in Canada".  Spoiled Brat!

Powderman:  I have brothers and relatives in Tennessee who owns farms.  Another brother in Texas, and a close friend that owns a big ranch.   And close friends living in Florida that owns farm land.  So after I hunt in Alaska I usually go to Tennessee, then to Texas, then to Florida, then back to Texas.  hunting after each move.  Then back to Alaska for Spring Bear, and Beaver trapping.  Rog
