Leaping Lizards, er ah armadillos.
« on: July 14, 2010, 01:15:14 PM »
I've killed more than a couple armadillos in my time;  as a matter of fact, I will go out of my way to kill them.  Shot a couple recently at my daughter's new place with a 38 which anchored them immediately.

I was at my niece's house the other night and when I got ready to go, there stood one in the headlamps glare, just daring me.

My nephew-in-law handed me his semi auto in 32 and said "try mine".

When the shot hit that critter, it must have lept 5' high.  I never saw the like.  Then it took off at about the speed of a Saturn 2 rocket.

Of course it died, just not right then.  I guess that armor was too much for a 32 auto hollow point.

Like I said, I've shot a few, but never saw one leap that high! ???

I shot one with a 150 gr from a 30-30 from a 30' high tree stand.
Hit it right in the middle of the back.
It crawled off where I couldn't see it, complained for about a half an hour, then finally got quiet.
Messed up the deer hunting.

They can sure destroy a yard. About once a month I have to shovel dirt into holes they dig at night. My grandkids come over all the time and I sure don't want one of them to get hurt while running.
Have any of you guys ever tried trapping an armadillo?

I read somewhere once you could use a live trap baited with a box of worms (fish bait). I have never tried it and never heard anybody else trying it. The critters only come out way past my bed time and I sure don't want to sit up waiting on them.

If you want to see them jump, shoot the buggers with a shotgun.

If you want to see them jump, shoot the buggers with a shotgun.

I cornered one in the back yard one night. He was between my shop wall and a stack of wood. He didn't seem to be in any hurry to leave so I got an old 12 gauge shot gun from the shop. I backed up about 30 feet and let him have it. He jumped, made some weird noise, ran around the yard and then just stood there. After a few minutes he went right back to digging a rooting around in the grass. After a serious fit of cussing and stomping I took care of business with a couple of 22LR rounds.

:) Howdy! Here in Texas you see them dead on the road everywhere. Like someone said, they jump up and are hit by the underside of a car or truck. Keeps the buzzards busy all the time. Always, Gene

Carriers of some nasty diseases! Leprosy and Rabies
for starters. Various parasitic worms. I did not shoot them until this year,
but there are so many that they are doing some serious damage.
Where are the vitals on these things? nothing but a headshot seems to kill them
with a .22 LR.
