Glass Bedding...Advice Needed.
« on: October 19, 2010, 04:03:19 AM »
I want to learn how to glass bed rifles so I think I will start with a cheap one like my plastic stocked Stevens 200 in 22-250. Are there any tutorials on this? I prefer not to screw it up but if I do oh well. I've heard some people have added small metal bars in plastic stocks to help stiffen them. Any opinions on this? What would you use? Which products work best and are simplest to use?

Thanks for any input and advice you can give me.

You've set a difficult task for yourself. Synthetic stocks sometimes don't get along well with bedding compound. The compund may not stick or it may damage the material the stock is made of. Test and use accordingly. Brownells AccraGlass is my material of chioce although I've tried others with some success the AccraGlass has proven consistantly better. I prefer the gel for bedding rifles as it tends to stay where its put a bit better than the runnier standard material. They both can and in some instances should be re-enforced with other material to strengthen against cracking. I've not had the problem with AvvraGlass but some brands get too 'hard' and become brittle. Call Brownells 'TechSupport' hotline and ask to be certain but they used to ssnd an instruction sheet with each package of material. I've descibed my method here before so a little searching should find it for you. If you'd like I would bet I have some of the old instruction sheets and would send them to you snaiol mail if you wish.. Good luck.

Recently did my first solo bedding job, granted it was only a pillar bedding job.  On my bedding efforts, I use a product called DEVCON.  It works real well with plastic or wood, just rough up the surface.  Be sure to use lots of release, I use clear shoe polish paste.  I have also added a forearm stiffener to some stocks.  I hogged out whatever materials necessary to run a aluminum tube from the recoil lug to the front swivel.  Make sure the diameter of the Al tube is small enough so the barreled action will still fit down into the stock.  I then use some 2 part epoxy to glue it in.  This came from Walmart, I think.  Probably best to get two packs.

Pilliar bedding, IMHO, is lots easier and mostly the same results as glass bedding the entire action.  I got my pillars from Brownells and cut them down to the correct length.

Best of luck,
