Got nothing against Handi's, as I have 2, a .223 heavy barrel with several coyotes to its credit, and a 7x57 that I haven't blooded yet.  Also have a big Martini in 30/40AI that puts 3 at 100 inside a dime.  In other words I love single shots.  A while back I ran up on a cadet Martini reworked to .357Mag, 24" 1 in 16" twist barrel, and a flip up Parker-Hale rear sight that just followed me home.  The jerk that rebarreled it managed to let the tip of his drill when putting on the forend screw crack thru into the bore, so I had to repair that.  Been out today trying it out.  A 158gr SWC pushed by 10gr 4227  put 'em 1" apart at 30 yds,  some factory mag loads gave 3/4".  I think the potential is there.  Right now I have a Parker-Hale front sight on it and need to get a different insert for longer range work.  I'm gonna rework this one into a .357 Max shortly as I think the twist will work well with the 180 gr.  Gonna be fun, especially if I get into some hogs.  Here endeth the epistle.  Goatwhiskers the Elder

How did you repair the drill bit hole into the bore in the middel of the barrel? That sound interesting, more info (and pictures perhaps) please....<><....:)

Sounds like you need to post the 7x57 in the classifieds to fund some of your other projects. ;D BTW, I'll take it!!!!

Dinny, I'd been wanting another 7x57 for years, 'cause I don't believe it takes these super magnums to slay the white-tail buck.  Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I do believe putting one bullet where it belongs beats blowing both shoulders off.

MSP, here goes, altho some may think I'm crazy.  The breakthru was about the size of a hat pin, and the hole was threaded .210x27tpi.  Used a #3 drill with the point ground off which just removed the old thread and squared off the bottom of the hole, then threaded it 28tpi.  Then used a piece of .250 drill rod and threaded it 28tpi not cut to full depth, tinned with silver solder, screwed into the hole and soldered, then dressed off flush.  I then used a 1" piece of shotgun barrel with a rib attachment on it sectioned long ways and silver soldered under the barrel over the original hole.  I then drill & tap the old rib lug for the forend screw.  Should be strong enough, considering that the original deal was a brass screw into the leaking hole.  Goatwhiskers the Elder

I have a martini cadet in 357 magnum and another in 32 Winchester special, both are lots of fun and if the 357 mag was not so accurate, I might have it rechambered to maxi, but she shoots real good as she stands...  The 32 Winchester special actually shoots very well also, amazing given how it was rechambered, a little awkward to chamber a round and eject with most scope mounts though given the length of the round.

Yeah, Graycg, given that with the Max you can shoot 3 different cartridges, the old maxim if it ain't broke don't fix it still applies.  Goatwhiskers

  At the risk of repeating unsubstantiated internet 'wisdom', you may not be good to go with the Max in a Cadet action.  While reading up on another Martini project, I saw somewhere that the Max was too long for the Cadet action but fine for the 455 or the 303 'standard' length actions.  I don't have a Cadet action so it wasn't really a big thing for me but the tidbit got filed away in my mind.


  Of course, it don't mean squat 'till you break out the measurung instruments and confirm or deny it.

Point well taken, Mr. Williams.  I was aware that certain fatter cartridges such as .44Mag aren't recommended as they leave the chamber wall questionably thin, but hadn't thought much about the length.  Graycg mentioned a .32Win in one, but I realize that is a tapered case.  I will do some careful measuring and research before I buy a bunch of stuff I can't use, or make alterations I can't change.  (There is always a cure for the sausage that's too long).  Goatwhiskers
