SANTA MONICA — Barbara Billingsley, who gained supermom status for her gentle portrayal of June Cleaver, the warm, supportive mother of a pair of precocious boys in "Leave it to Beaver," died Saturday. She was 94.

Billingsley, who had suffered from a rheumatoid disease, died at her home in Santa Monica, said family spokeswoman Judy Twersky.

When the show debuted in 1957, Jerry Mathers, who played Beaver, was 9, and Tony Dow, who portrayed Wally, was 12. Billingsley's character, the perfect stay-at-home 1950s mom, was always there to gently but firmly nurture both through the ups and downs of childhood.

Beaver, meanwhile, was a typical American boy whose adventures landed him in one comical crisis after another.

Billingsley's own two sons said she was pretty much the image of June Cleaver in real life, although the actress disagreed. She did acknowledge that she may have become more like June as the series progressed.

"I think what happens is that the writers start writing about you as well as the character they created," she once said. "So you become sort of all mixed up, I think."

A wholesome beauty with a lithe figure, Billingsley began acting in her elementary school's plays and soon discovered she wanted to do nothing else.

Although her beauty and figure won her numerous roles in movies from the mid-1940s to the mid-1950s, she failed to obtain star status until "Leave it to Beaver," a show that she almost passed on.

I know what you mean.

We look at who we have now and see very few with the public grace, poise, and dignity that we saw in the likes of Ms. Billingsley, Tony Curtis, either of the Hepburns, Cary Grant, et al. Heck, the members of The Rat Pack, with their excesses, showed more class than most of todays crop.

Even the sports stars of the time - Bart Starr, Dan Fouts (OK, he was later) Larry Bird, DiMagio, Mays, had at least some clue about decorum and decent behavior in public.

Yeah, but what about 2-1/2 Men and the Big Bang and Modern Family?

2 1/2 men is an oxymoron! I tried watching it with my Grandson, because he wanted me to see how funny it was.

"I'm telling ya" This generation gap is huge! After about five minutes of mental torture, I excused myself, and left for the little room to regurgitate. It really doesn't take much to entertain today, and a show with morals just don't get it! The two so called men on the series wouldn't make a pimple on one real man's A_ _.

And the child on the show!.........Someone should be in prison for subjecting a child to this kind of porn :(

What is Glittertown? "Duh" me! That would be Hollyweird I believe. And signing a big contract would make it right to subject our kids to this kind of life?

I doubt he is crying and neither would his folks. I do agree with you, this show is not for young and innocent eyes and ears.

June Cleaver was the epitome of the perfect mother and house wife.   Who would not want a mom who was always caring and understanding and never went ballistic on you even when you screwed up royal.  And what guy would not want a stay at home wife who kept the house neat as a pin, had supper waiting on the table for you when you got home and served it to you wearing hose, heals and pearls, face made up and hair done?

RIP Mrs Cleaver.
