Trying to understand something.
« on: October 26, 2010, 06:43:42 AM »
I got a piece of preperty that I coyote hunt on.  Recently, the land owner has given permission to a trapper to get some coyotes.  The other day, I went out at first light to call the place.  Not takers.  However, while walking back, I discovered a couple of dirt hole sets with some fresh catch circles around them.  I look over to the side of the traps and discover two dead song dogs laying next to the sets.  They were whacked in the head.  The pelts were good, no ears cut off (Bounty), and the traps were reset.  I cannot understand why the trapper didnt take the dogs.  So, I get curious and decide to check out the rest of the property.  Sure enough, I find 4 more dirt hole sets all with dead dogs laying next to the sets.  None of them had any bad pelts or ears cut off.  2 of the four sets were reset and the other two were left with tripped traps in them. Two days have passed now and the dogs are still laying next to the traps.  Why would a trapper put all the time in to make these sets and not take the prize?  Please give me some input here.  The land owner is kind of pi$$ed because the trapper is leaving the dogs on the property and I told him that I would try and get him an explanation.
It's all a hot mess...........

Something doesn't add up here.I know of no trapper that would leave the catch laying next to the traps.
 Something seems amiss.

ya, that's what I am thinking.  But for the life of me, I cannot figure out the thought process behind this other than trapping just for the purpose of killing off the coyote pop.  This guy has high dollar equipment though.  I get the impression that he knows what he is doing.

You aren't going to catch more yotes by leaving dead ones next to your sets. Also odd the numbers he has gotten.
Seems more like someone is bringing them in and throwing them there.

Please elaborate.  I'm not much of a trapper.  Know a little bit, but I'm more of a hunter.

As you know, coyotes are not dumb.Setting a dead yote near a set is going to keep other yotes from coming around.

Just asking how long were they there ? Did he come in early and maybe go to work with intent to pick up on the way home ? Is it cold enough to keep them from spoiling ?

Man, you are asking me questions I have no way of knowing the answers.I have no idea where you are and without an inspection of the yotes--I have no idea what shape they are in.
If you come up with any answers, please let us know.

seems odd... coyotes hit on the head, not shot?  100% catch rate? you found all the sets? If I were the landowner and was pissed at the way someone was using my land, I do believe I wouldn't hesitate to call that person and get an explination myself.
