Defective voting machines???
« on: October 26, 2010, 05:14:36 PM »
From a friend in NC: "A neighbor of mine voted today in early voting at the downtown New Bern site and had a strange experience. He "pulled the lever" to vote straight Republican (pressed the circle at the top that allows you to vote straight ticket), and when he looked down, the voting machine had highlighted all the Democratic candidates. He cleared it and tried again, and the same thing happened. He called a poll assistant over, she tried it, and the same thing happened. Several phone calls were made, and they finally got the machine to highlight the correct candidates. If my neighbor had not been paying attention, he would have given his votes to the opposition!

He told the Republican judge about his experience, and he said she did not seem to be that concerned. He told a Republican worker outside the poll and that worker had him call Channel 12 news about his experience."

PLEASE tell your friends and neighbors if they are voting straight Republican (or voting period) to make sure that the correct candidates are highlighted before they finish. Accident???? POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Nevada voter claims that Harry Reid's name was pre-checked on her ballot when she got it.

SEIU controls the voting machines in Clark Co. Nevada,(Las Vegas).

From my understanding (if this is the same case I was reading about), this resulted in an issue from the language selection screen.  When you pressed the button for one language, if you finger didn't come back off the screen fast enough it registered another touch on the input below.   Selecting the Spanish language option registered the other candidate as their name was below that prompt when the screens changed.

Either way, overall I just don't think electronic voting, as it currently stands - is a good thing. Touch screens are NOT a good input medium for this.  If they're going to do electronic voting, the machines used should use open source publicly reviewable program code.  Input method should be through physical buttons - preferably with a mechanical switch for accuracy and durability.  Each vote should print a PAPER RECEIPT at the end that the recipient can visually verify and then turn into the polls prior to exiting (no taking the receipts home - if you can prove to others who you voted for then it opens it up to unions and other pressure groups trying to force people to vote a certain way and demand proof).

What we have now is not working.

There should be NO spanish option on ANY voting machine, or any ballots printed in anything but ENGLISH. This is America, we speak ENGLISH here. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Remember what Stalin said. "It's not who votes that counts,it's who counts the votes" I also heard, can't comfirm, that SEIU employees are servicing the voter machines. SEIU was the union that spent tons of money to elect obama.

Touch screens are for the IPhone generation, not seniors who aren't even sure what year it is.

In this state (Washington), all of our voting is done by mailed ballots.  That is, the ballots are mailed to us and we either mail them back, or take them to a drop-off.  I like this a lot better than the old machine balloting that we used to have, but do I trust that everything is on the up and up?  No way.  We know all too well that at least the Dumocrats have figured out a number of ways to rig close elections and I'm afraid we are about to see it all played out again this time.

It's sad that in a country that is supposed to be the example to the world of what democractic integrity is all about, can't come up with a truly trustworthy voting and counting system.  Heck, we can't even agree on who should be allowed to vote.

I'm very comfortable with my Touch screen phone (and I'm pretty sure I'm young enough to be considered iphone generation), but the input method is NOT that precise.  Sometimes my phone when sending an email will register the completely wrong character.  On an email - no biggie. I backup and correct it.  Worse case scenario if I don't catch it is I have a typo in my message.  I don't think we should trust the accuracy to a VOTING machine though, particularly when the big pluses of the touch screen - user experience - are irrelevant.  People don't care if the UI is pretty or flash.  You just need to register your choices and get out of there.  Physical buttons are less error-prone.

The voting machines I have used the last few times were touch screen with a paper backup system on them. They are large and easy to read and use. After you make all your choices you have to review your complete finished electronic ballot. Then it prints out your ballot on a roll of paper. You look through the sealed glass and make sure your printed ballot is correct and hit the finish button. Then it resets for the next voter. So there is a printed and electronic/digital? record of your ballot. Can it be manipulated? Probably. Do I worry about voter fraud? Yes. It seems to me that no matter what if someone doesn't want to count your vote, then they just don't count your vote. Unless the counting is watched very closely. I always vote early at these polling places with these machines. I have never trusted mail-in ballots. If for no other reason than the fact the post office is not trust worthy. Let alone the paper ballot shuffle at the voter registrar's office.

Obama made a statement to some group recently that if Republicans win, there will be fighting in the streets.  He also called Republicans enemies, not political opponents, or political enemies, just plaing enemies.

Living in a small rural place does have a few advantages, No mosque, temples or synagogues and we still use paper ballots.
