Jacketed 230 Grain Hollow Point Options
« on: October 23, 2010, 02:31:02 PM »
I have finally run out of Hornady XTP's for my Springfield Long Slide. I am looking for experiences with any bullets of this type. Something with great expansion, accuracy and reliable feeding. I currently have quantities of FMJ's and cast truncated rounds, need some HP's.

I always liked the 200gr JHP's from Speer these are like soup bowels with the hollow points.  In my wet sand test a few years back they expanded and performed very well.   Lets say in real meat/flesh(non human) its entry hole is like a quarter(25 cents) and maybe a tad larger.  I pumped these up as high as i could go in the speer manual.  Sorry i know your asking for 230gr jhp's but my carry rounds are either winchester silver tips(facrtory loads) or my home brewed speer 200gr JHP's.  I like the 200gr JHP's much better but some 1911's don't like to eat them.  Remember these are self defence urban rounds.  In the wilds for being in bear country were i get the ocasional passer by bear i'm thinking of going with the 255grs for my 45acp something with some weight behind the punch.  For some reason i think reveryone has the same idea i find the larger bullets for mt 45acp and my 44mag are harder to find.  I'd like to bump up my 44mag ammo to at least 270gr JSP and 300gr JHP max.  I only can find the 270gr bullets now.  The bullet selection seems to be smaller lately in most popular calibers.

What started me pumping up my 45acp rounds is i seen a guy dragged from the car at the ER that was shot 5 times with a 45acp and live.

I'm getting ready to laod up some 230 grn Remington Golden Sabre bullets I purchased a few weeks ago at a gun show. I like the GS for close work in deer that walk under my stand.

Cheese.....I've been having good results with Montana Gold jacketed bullets in .45ACP. https://secure.mooseweb.com/montanagoldbullet.com/pricelist.tpl

If you do not want to buy 1000 at a time you can get them 500 at a time here at First Class Bullets.http://firstclassbulletsandbrass.com/shop/article_18/.45-cal-230gr-JHP-bullets-.451%22.html?shop_param=cid%3D15%26aid%3D18%26

i still have a bunch of nosler hollow points that i loaded years ago with a friend when i was introduced to dillon loaders.   i used to buy them in bulk packs of 250, and they were quite reasonable if i remember correctly.   seeing as how i cast my own these days, i dont have to buy the noslers anymore.   if i had to buy more though, i would definately go with noslers.    hornady xtps are no joke, either.

Gold Dot's have great reputation for good expansion at any reasonable velocity, and are known to feed well.  It seems to be a little softer bullet then the XTP.  For what its worth, it's what I carry in my .45's for self defense.  The Remington BJHP's also have a good reputation, according to the various "1 shot stop" charts you see around.
