Week 4
« on: November 16, 2010, 08:40:08 AM »
Another bust!  Thursday through Sunday and  - NOTHING!   >:(

My trail cam showed little activity and all of it was after dark.    :(  Same for the areas my 2 other hunting buddies hunt.

About the only productive thing I did was clear some more of the property line of the section I hunt.  I'm going to make 4 wheeler access all around that area and look for new stand sites.  I think I'm finally going to break down and get myself a small (250cc) 4 wheeler.  Just something to get me in and out of the area.  I can't seem to walk as far as I used to anymore.   :-\  'course, 50 years of smoking and the big  belly that is evident in my new avatar may have something to do with that!   :-[

Well, actually we did see one deer.  Hunting buddy #2 was driving my truck (well after dark) down to the farm since I was feeling a mite poorly, when I suddenly got eyeball to eyeball contact with a doe through the windshield!  She was coming at a run from the left (median) and I just had time to holler "LOOK OUT!"  Roger jerked the car to the right and I heard a heckova bang.  She hit the left rear quarter panel a glancing blow just over the rear tire.  When we got stopped a pickup pulled in behind us and asked if we hit a deer.  He said he saw her getting up after we passed.  Roger said "you don't 'spose she had insurance do you?"   ::)  Fortunately there was just two 6 inch scrapes down the side of my truck.  Not even any real dent.

I'm finished hunting until after T'giving and will probably only go down every other weekend for the next couple a months.  The only good thing is I have my 2 legs of Bambi in the freezer now!    ;D

Good thing the truck didn't get banged up to bad. I moved a washer and dryer a couple nights ago. They were secured with one strap across both of them. I was driving to my daughters house when she yelled "DEER"!!!!  I wasn't sure which was going to be worse. Hitting the deer or having a combo washer and dryer flying through the back glass of my truck. Don't know how I managed it but I missed the deer and my load stayed put. Being as how this is a family site I will spare the details of how my underware faired through all of the excitement. :o

Seems this season is turning out mighty bad. I think somebody jinxed me. Usually by now I have meat in the freezer and have seen plenty of deer. This year is just the oppisite. I sure got to come up with a new strategy.

Dang Richard,
these crazy Jawja does must have it in for trucks.  This past weekend I was driving down the main dirt road to my food plot and a doe jumps out right in front of my truck too!   I swerved to the right and lost steering in the soft sand, went off into the grass on the side of the road and WHAM!!!   ??? ??? Right into a fallen 4" diameter pine limb. :-[

I thought it had hit the skid plate under my engine but a few minutes later I see my temp gauge starting to peak.   :-[  I got out and checked and sure enough that limb had lifted up and went into a 4" space between the bumper and grill, pushed the AC condenser fan into the condenser, bending the frame and pushing that into the radiator!   :-\  Lost all fluids.   Luckily it was about 30 degreees outside.  Just popped the hood and let er cool off.  ;)  Made it the 3 miles back to camp with three cooling off stops.  Towed her back to Florida on our tractor flatbed behind my buddies Silverado.

Damage from that doe totalled about $1100 when I got my truck back this Wednesday!......  Man this is sure one expensive season :'(
