Rdfx and Bogmaster, how's the lines coming along?
« on: November 03, 2010, 08:50:20 PM »
The northern mallards have shown up. I have a little cornfield mallard shoot planned for early tomorrow.I'm not going to set canine traps until our water season opens and I have days off.I got some more muskrat spots to scout after the hunt.I have no idea why I'm checking out more spots.I won't ever get around to all that I have lined up now.Maybe they'll be spots for through the ice rat trapping.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

yotero,  lots of mallards landing in my cut off corn fields, tonight approximately  200 mallards were circling and landing in field.  Pulling in alot of mink, and a few rats,  coons are just starting to have litters again after distemper hit about ten years ago.  Where i used to take between 150 - 200 coons on my mink line, last year i only took  7.   Doesnt hurt to have extra land to trap on especially rats as in three days or so you should have creme of the crop and you move on to  another area.  Good luck.

Got 5 drake mallards,Tuffy,my dog had a great time.Spent most of the rest of the day building rat floats and adjusting new traps.I have been finding small stock dams with muskrats in them. There's a dam in every one of these pastures and a lot of them seem to have bank rats. You can drive right up to the dams to check traps.Saves time.

Tom I wish you and Lee would quit sending all that water south! Boy and I are going to start our 1 week rat line on the river Monday and we are about 4-5 ft over normal river level. At this rate the rats are going to be up in the woods. Only good part is all the guys that run to the houses with the 110s won't know what to do leaving those rats for the boy and I. We set mostly the #1 duke guarded traps on bank slides and feed beds along shore. So while those guys are poking around the few high water houses the rats have built. We'll be working the shore line where the rats are banked up, best we can. My biggest worry right now is having enough stakes that are long enough. Might have to hit the lumber yard, but I hate using new lathe, they work but the beavers seem to like cutting them even thought their pine. Can't trap the beavers out of the way till duck season closes the end of the month.
So we'll just go make the best of it.
