I wouldn't say that they are cheap here, €64 for 1Kg (2,2lbs) but the H-110 is even more expensive for us.

Any one using Lil' Gun in the 44 mag? I see that it is adjacent to H110 on my burn rate chart and is listed on Hodgdon's web site for the 44's.

Curious to know of any one's experience with this powder.

VH,

For my 44 Mag loads, I use W296(aka h110), H4227, and Blue Dot.    I used the w296 and h4227 for most loads though.  Most of the Blue Dot goes in shotgun slug loads, as I use my 12 gauge slug gun a lot now for any necessary followup shots.

I save my L'il Gun for the .357 magnum.  In .44 magnum I use a 240 grain wheelweight bullet over 19.0 grains of Alliant 2400.  It gives me 1350 fps from my 7.5" Ruger.  It's not a max load, but it seems to do the job.

I've settled on just two loads for that revolver.  The load above for times when a magnum load is necessary, and a .44 Special load with that same bullet over 7.5 grains of Unique.  The special load gives me 970 fps from the revolver and is very accurate.  It's also poweful enough that it will probably suffice for 95% if the shooting I want to do with that revolver.

HP38/W231 (same pdr)6.6 grn 240 cast
2400 19.5 for cast 20 for 240 JHP 22 for 200 JHP..

+1 on the 2400 loads, I buy it in 8 pound jugs.

I used to use alot of it but wont use it anymore. It just burns to hot. Its know to cause forcing cone premature wear. Ive still got most of a keg left and was using it in the 50 beowulf to burn it up. Just the other day I was out shooting it and had some ammo loaded with it and another batch loaded with wc297. One quick 7 round clip as fast as i could pull the trigger with lilgun and you could probably have lit a cirgerette on the barrel it was that hot. I cooled the gun and tried the same with 297 and could easily grab the gun by the barrel. The only other place i have left to use it is ive got good loads for my 3220 rifle using it. I dont tend to shoot that gun fast and it doesnt have a forcing cone so ill probably burn up the rest in it. When its gone im done with lilgun though. Theres just to many other powders that are just as good without the problems of lilgun.

My experiences with Lil'Gun mirror those of Lloyd relative to barrel heat.  I've tried it with 45 Colt, 454 Casull and a couple 50's and in each instance the barrel heat was very noticeable compared to any other powder that I use.

I’ve got very good accuracy using Lil’Gun but ever since I learn that FA came out against using Lil'Gun powder in their revolvers, I’ve stopped using it in my revolvers – I just don’t need any improvements in eroding the forcing cone.

I didn't know there were any issues with Lil' Gun, thanks for the info. I originally bought the stuff for my 221 Fireball. It would shoot a 40gr bullet unbelievably fast with excellent accuracy from my Hart bbl. Eventually I rebarreled to .223 and shoot heavier bullets that don't work well with Lil' Gun so I have a few extra cans laying around.

I thought it looked like a good alternative for the 44mag but apparently not.

Reread this post and confirmed via Seirra Manual that H110/630P will get you to 1700 fps. in  a Ruger Super Black Hawk 7.5".  Over 2K in a rifle.

It's H110/WW296.  Winchester's 630P has been out of production for almost 30 yrs or so.

I use a lee dipper with blue dot (18.5g per lee manual) and a remington 180g sjhp.  These shoot pretty nice out of my sbh hunter.

i didn't know that this thread still got attention haven't been on here in a while. i got a box of randy garrett's 310 hammerhead ammo at 1325 fps and have a load with oregon trail true shots in 310 that went about a half inch minus the the flyer at 40 yards. i am going to hunt with randy's loads this year and send the gun off for a wellness checkup after season. nothing appears to be wrong with the gun, i just want it checked over by a knowledgeable physician to be safe. since the gun still wears its original barrel i don't see lil'gun finding its way in there any time soon. a load that looks like something to work to is the hornady 240xtp and 22 grains h110. this gun is going to get a workout with the ballistic buffalo testing bullets for variouis people this year so who knows what i will end up using in it. a friend who makes moulds sent us some 277 wfn's that look killer.

22 grains of h110 aka w296 is a good load.  I used a similar load in my  Handi-Rifle, and factory 240 gr JSP in the Ruger SB.  24.4 grains of 296 under a lee 240 gr hardcast SWC of .430 diameter.    The load data stated about 1500 fps for a rifle and specified not to be used in handguns. This load data is from an older model Lee Classic Loader.  The recipe is still in Lee's reloading book, but I decided it is best to follow the original instructions with the Lee Classic Loader.   I imagine that load is good for anything up to, and including, elk and moose.

There is no better book max load than 24.0 grains of W296/H110 under a 240 grain bullet of your choice. I've yet to see a .44 magnum that doesn't shoot it accurately with any of the various 240 grain bullets I use. Works with jacketed or cast bullets.

I dropped the grains to 23.5 of H110 under a 240 gr JHP for my standard load in my blackhawk.
My brother shot a large doe at about 40 yards striking with a front quartering shot.
This bullet passed through the left front shoulder and the bullet was found about 8 inches
from the tail under the hide. Almost passed through length wise! I can never see where I could
need more power than this.

the plot thickened for me this week as i finally paid off an 8-1/2 inch abilene in 44 magnum as well. i think what will eventually happen is that the abilene will get set up to shoot 250 and lighter bullets and the seville which loves 310grain bullets will get set up with a taller front sight and be my heavy bullet gun. 310 .430's at 1200 fps shoould kill anything that i could want to point that gun at. i get to pick the abilene up tuesday or wednesday and can not wait to get it in front of the chronograph with some 240 xtp's and start at 22 grains h110
