Got my limit of 8 squirrels today.
« on: October 30, 2010, 06:01:56 PM »
I went out today and took my 12ga pardner full choke.  I got 6 this morning and 2 this afternoon.  I was shooting the winchester 7 1/2 dove loads.  I don't think my gun likes them too much because there wasn't a lot of shot in them at 30-40 yards. That's probably a good thing though.   I haven't carried a single shot squirrel hunting since I was a kid.  Tomorrow night will be squirrel stew.

This is the first time I made the limit in one day.  Usually I hunt with a rifle and only get a couple a trip.  Yesterday I was meat hunting and it was my only chance to go for the season because deer season opens next weekend.  That's why I used a shotgun, and the pardner is just so much lighter than a pump.

Way to go!!! I am in the market for a H&R 20 gauge myself for an easy to carry squirrel/deer/dove gun!!! I think carrying a slug in the chamber when walking in to the set-up and then changing to small shot once there would be nice for those days I sit in an oak grove!

I thank God everyday for my loving wife and all the fond memories of hunting with my Papa from a child until now.

Please take time to take a kid hunting, it will be a life long memory and blessing for both of you!

Seems so strange to see a limit on squirrels.

Grey's are open from oct 1 to dec 31.

Red's have no closed season.  (not very big maybe 1/2 pounders)

Can "fill" the bag with a shotgun in pretty quick order though.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but do you guys shoot red squirrels?  And if you do, do you eat them?   I hunt gray squirrels and yes I eat them, there delicious.  I see alot of red squirrels but I've never shot them or eaten them.. Am I missing something?

Tony,

Personally I don't shoot them since they are rare in my area.  They were somewhat wiped out by hunters taking them as trophies as well as the  reduced habitat.  Somehow the grays survived and flourished here.

Where I live "fox squirrels" are called "red squirrels". I had to look at what a real American red squirrel was, since folks were calling them small. I was thinking maybe other areas had grays the size of 'coons! :o Looks like we would call those "pine squirrels" they're not a lot bigger than a chipmunk or what my grandparents call a "ground squirrel". Funny how different areas name the same creatures.

Red squirrel adults are like twice the size of a chipmunk if not 3 times.  The Greys are about twice the size of the reds.  They also come in Reddish Grey.
