Who uses a Ghillie suit?
« on: November 07, 2010, 11:13:12 AM »
I am thinking of getting a Ghillie suit from Cabela's, it's the Mossy Oak Leafy suit. Has anyone used this suit? & if you have how do you like it? I know Cabela's is good to deal with. A friend has a similar suit & he likes it. I'm hearing things like you just dissapear in the woods using them. Any users out here who would share their experiences, likes & dislikes, with me?
Thanks Frank

Some like them, some don't because of possible string contact.  I may get the ASAT 3D leafy, which I think works better.

I picked one up at a flea mkt. for $10.00.  Don't know why I bought it other than it was cheap and I didn't have one..... :D

I may give her a go in spring turkey hunting.....

I use a ghillie kit I got from bushrag dot com.  Its synthetic. Been using it early season before firearms season for a couple of years now.  Last year 6 yards from a doe, out of position to shoot.  This year missed a doe in Sept. Had medical issues in October and did not hunt.  After firearms season and when the cold sets in I switch to wool in brownish earth toneish pattern.    I really like useing the ghillie for ground hunting.  Make sure your backside/backdrop is thick , with some brush in the front  you'll blend right in......

i do not know the brand of mine but it is the string type it blends in very well but if you are going through briars or thick brush i get hung up pretty quick. i take mine out in a back pack and put it on when i get to where i plan on hunting. i have had other hunters walk with in a few feet of me and never seen me. one guy said he thought i was a lil pine bush. the bow string dont grab the strings of the suit either  like i thought it would. in the winter with snow on the ground i use it in or  around small pines. it dose blend in very well just hard to travel in it.

The local army/navy store has them for $80ish bucks but I dont care for the material, the one they had set up out side was kinda soggy from a steady sprinkle of rain.
They also had sevral types of netting for $10/15 bucks, been thinkin of build'n my own if I can find the synthetic material, and mite save a little cach to boot.
I've never been lost,,,just rite fearsome confused for a few months.

I think I'm headed in the opposite direction.  Camouflage is overrated in my opinion.  More and more I think the statment of a (slightly) older hunter a few years ago is what we should go by:  "Wear something dark, sit in the shade, and be still."

First off, I'm with jackruff. Having spent a little time behind NVGs, alot of camoflage is overrated IMO.

But secondly, ghillies are really easy to make, and a good many of the Marine scout snipers I've known made their suits cheap, but good enough that humans with more advanced optical abilities were hard pressed to see them. So if you got to have one, buy a set of cammies and some burlap sacks and get creative.

For a gun and limited movement a Ghillie is good. For bowhunting they are in the way and attract every greenbrier and Bois d Arc around you. Green wool pants , a tiger stripe camo jacket and being still have done me a lot of good in the bowhunting woods. The leaf suits are more to my liking and lighter to wear than the Ghillie suit I have used.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

TN we had some specialized night camo that was vertical and horizontal stripe with blothches. I can't remember using it and looking with NVG's at it I think it was supposed to blend in with the graininess of the old nvg's.

billy, the new digital patterns on standard uniforms is a vast improvement over the old patterns, for sure, particularly against NVG technology. Not certain if deer really appreciate the difference though.

I use the lightweight, nylon type 3D leafy suit in southern Jawja.   It doesn't hang up in the briars, and is very concealing.  During archery hunts I use a good forearm bracer, otherwise I do get "leaf" contact with my string.   I have had turkeys come within 10 feet of me on the ground with this outfit.

During general gun season we hunt mostly from treestands and we are wearing blaze orange, so I most often don a pair of jeans and a fleece, or wool sweater(theyre quiet) and get up off the ground.

My son used the same leafy type suit during turkey season this year and could almost disppear when still and setting in any type of foliage. A real ghillie is heavy and does soak up the moisture. The new commercial ones maybe alot different than the original sniper suits i dealt with made of burlap strips. Standing and walking you looked like a swamp monster.

Thanks fella's I put one on my Christmas list. I'll see if it shows up. I'm hoping to get one before next archery season, but I spend some time hunting Coyotes with a .243 too, so I'm wanting to try it.

I had the leafy suit from Cabelas. It was to noisey for bowhunting in my opinion and I dont think it worked much better than regular camo. I have a long coat with the different colored burlap tied to it and the hat cover. It works great but It will collect briers and burrs if your trying to stalk around and its hot in warm weather. I trim mine for good string clearence and it hasnt seemed to affect the deer seeing me.I also carry mine to where I'm going to hunt and put it on when I get there.
