How about a free cell phone & minutes

I checked and the link does work.
More of our $$$ wasted!!!  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

LONGTOM

Just when you think you’ve heard it all,, our illustrious Congress quietly comes up with a new zinger to put their hands in your pockets, and pick them while you aren’t watching.

Isn't this just wonderful!

I was standing in line at the checkout counter at Wal Mart and as I looked at the line behind me, I saw a couple of people talking about what looked like identical new cell phones, bragging about the fact that their phones were free and so was the airtime.

The woman in line behind me had heard the same exchange and turned to the young man behind her and asked, “Is that a new type of cell phone?”

The young man replied, “Yes, this is my new ‘Obama phone’”.

She asked him what an “Obama phone” was, and he went on to say that, “Welfare recipients are now eligible to receive” what he described as (1) a FREE new cell phone, and (2) approximately 70 FREE minutes of air time every month.

Needless to say, I was a little skeptical about his answer, so when I got back home, I ‘Googled’ it, and lo and behold, he was telling the truth.

This was what I discovered:

SafeLink Wireless is a government supported program that provides a free cell phone and airtime each month for income-eligible customers.

In other words, your tax dollars are being distributed to a wireless phone provider to provide welfare recipients with free cell phones and airtime.

I don’t know about you, but as for me, enough is enough. We are $14 Trillion in debt, Congress is balking at continuing unemployment payments to those who want to work, and Congress is increasing the dole-out to dead beats.

The ship of State is sinking, and it’s sinking fast. The old concept of getting ahead through hard work has flown out the window. It has been replaced by Obama’s and Congress’ idea of “Hope and Change.” The country has changed all right, changed to "Why should I work for it, when I can get it for free?"

You can click on the link below to confirm for yourself that the “Obama Phone” is real.

Just have a barf bag ready.

The cell phone is used to call your drug dealer. Then you can pay him with the cash you got for selling your food stamps at half price.  And to think, all those years I worked for a living and paid for everything my family needed. Now, I ask, which one of us is the stupid one? They don't have to work. Just have kids and pass on the cycle. 2nd and third generation welfare.
Makes me so pissed that I get chest pains.

The idea is likely that you can't realistically look for a job without access to a phone (which I'll admit, is fairly plausible).  You also have an inability to communicate with the police and/or emergency services - PARTICULARLY with pay-phones all but gone in most places.  That said, I'd say landlines would be more appropriate.  It may have just ended up that cheapy cell phones cost less money than the land-line though.

NOTE: I'm not one to defend Obama at all (goodness knows he's incompetent), but doing some fact-checking reveals that the policies that put this into place went into effect in August and September of 2008 - a few months BEFORE Obama was elected.

The way I see it most of these people that are receiving free phones from the tax payers never had a job and will never  want a job, as long as the tax payers are paying for their food, housing, heating, transportation, and other goodies like cable tv, and cell phones. What will be next free computers, using the lie that they can't find a job if they don't have a computer and the internet to search for one. A job??? Why the heck would these people be looking for a job when the tax payers have been giving them all their needs their whole life?
What really cracks me up is when the news media shows us pictures of these poor people that need cell phones etc.. and many of them are wider than door ways. Poor family's on welfare that are fat, go figure.

It just might be that unintended consequences may come into play.  Some people who use cell phones a lot are coming up with "salvitory tumors."  Some of the tumors are malignant and some have proven to be benign.  Anyway, this whole thing might be a way of testing whether, or not the phones are the actual culprit.  Seventy minutes a month should do the trick.

Way back when i heard about this, it was said everyone has the right to a phone, even if you are poor, so a FREE cell to anyone that's low income.

I see lots of folks around here that have them.

All studies that have held up to peer review to date have shown absolutely no danger from cellular phone usage.  You're getting as much or more radiation just from standing outside in the sun.

Most of the "ill effects" people are experiencing are in their minds.  One story I found particularly amusing: a company had built a large cell tower (I believe it was in South Africa).  The residents claimed that the "radiation" from it was making them sick. They were sending their kids away to relatives.  So the company said they turned it off.  Within a few days, everyone was saying how much better they felt and proclaimed that as evidence that the tower shouldn't be turned back online.  Then came the kicker: the tower had NEVER been turned on yet.  It was off the whole time they were claiming it was making them sick.

I wonder what the "peer reviews" had to say about the hand held radar speed dectectors the cops used to use.  Anyway, I'm going to resist having one of those cell things stuck to the side of my head.  I only use mine occasionally and even then I keep it short.  I'm also going to curtail my calls with portables; it is said that they are maybe even worse than cells.

How did we ever make it without these devices?

has love thy fellow man dissappeared?

Because people are against the federal Government picking the tax payers pockets so they can give little goodies away like cell phones to welfare recipients has nothing at all to do with loving thy fellow man. These people are being enslaved by our government. There is not an ounce of love involved, nor is there any intent of love when government steals money from some, and gives it to able bodied men and women. Love is when God puts it on peoples hearts to give to needy people, and donate to worthy causes, churches, and organizations. Our government has taken some of this opportunity away from people because of tax on top of tax, so they the government can distribute cell phones and other goodies in the name of helping the poor. When all its about is government gaining more power and control.
If tax payers are supplying people with all they need to live and then some. Where is any incentive to better themselves, or even think about looking for a job. If you see this enslavement of generation after generation as love, I guess your perspective of what love is, is a bit different than mine and others.

Just when you think you’ve heard it all,, our illustrious Congress quietly comes up with a new zinger to put their hands in your pockets, and pick them while you aren’t watching.

It has been replaced by Obama’s and Congress’ idea of “Hope and Change.” The country has changed all right, changed to "Why should I work for it, when I can get it for free?"

Tracfone is involved in this, and provide the phone.
I'm sure they expect most to use over the 70 min's and will make money on the deal

LIFELINE/SAFELINK FACT SHEET

There is no "Obama phone" or other newly created federal program to provide free cell phones. As you may know, this is a myth that is now circulating on the Web via email and blog sites. It has been thoroughly debunked by independent groups. (See for example: FactCheck.org at http://www.factcheck.org/2009/10/the-obama-phone/, which notes: "Low-income households have been eligible for discounted telephone service for more than a decade. But the program is funded by telecom companies, not by taxes, and the president has nothing to do with it."
The federal "Lifeline" program was created during the Reagan Administration. Lifeline is a federal program created by the Reagan era Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1984. The program was enhanced under Telecommunications Act of 1996, which was supported on a broadly bipartisan basis in Congress. The FCC’s Low Income Program of the Universal Service Fund, which is administered by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), is designed to ensure that quality telecommunications services are available to low-income customers at just, reasonable, and affordable rates. Lifeline support reduces eligible low-income consumers' monthly charges for basic telephone service.
Thanks to SafeLink, Lifeline support is now available for wireless phones. Traditionally, the Lifeline program was only available as a discount on a consumer’s landline telephone bill. SafeLink Wireless was created by TracFone Wireless, Inc. when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently approved the company to offer Lifeline -- a public assistance program that ensures telephone service is available and affordable for low-income subscribers. SafeLink Wireless applies the Universal Service Fund subsidy to an allotment of free airtime minutes and TracFone provides the wireless handset at the company’s expense. Instead of receiving a subsidized monthly telephone bill for Lifeline service, SafeLink converts the total amount of discounted service into minutes each month for one year. The cell phone offers in-demand features: voicemail, text, three-way calling, call waiting, caller ID and access to 911.
SafeLink phones are not paid for by taxpayers or the federal government. TracFone Wireless pays for the phones and also the cost of promoting its SafeLink program to make sure that eligible consumers know about the program.
SafeLink Wireless is making the vision of universal access to telecommunications services for all Americans a reality. As of October 2009, SafeLink has over 2 million customers and is available in 31 states - Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, DC, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Today, there are over 1,700 companies in the United States currently providing discounted telephone service. But, thanks to its extensive outreach promoting SafeLink, TracFone Wireless is one of the largest providers of Lifeline services in the United States, second only to AT&T.
Only certain Americans are eligible for SafeLink. Eligibility guidelines vary by state but in general individuals qualify if they participate in a public assistance program such as Food Stamps, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), National Free School Lunch, Federal Housing/Section 8 Assistance, or if they do not receive any of these public assistance programs, they may also qualify based on total household gross monthly income. Customers can learn more or apply by calling 1-800-SAFELINK or visiting www.SafeLink.com

Your exact benefits, including the number of free Minutes you will receive, depend on the state you live in.

It is for seniors that can't hear? Why would they need a phone?
