DIY window screens ??s
« on: November 18, 2010, 03:32:23 PM »
Anyone ever make window screens?   Got tips to share?  If not, anyone know where I can get (20) 4x4 window screens for cheap?  I'm enclosing an outdoor living area.  TIA

There is actually a very easy package that will take all the guess work out.  It comes with self adhesive velcro for the frame and then the screen is cut to fit and it sticks to the velcro.  Easy to remove or change if it gets a hole in it.  I saw it in a Lowe's a while back.  Had the euro version on my house in Germany too.  Worked well.

I have replaced the screen material in storm window screens.  A neoprene cord wedges it into a groove in the screen.  A tool that looks like a double barrel piza cutter stuff the screen in a groove, then the other end stuffs the cord into the groove to hold it.

Once I framed large windows into a patio under a deck, with pressure treated lumber. Stapled large sheets of screen over the openings, then finished it off by covering the stapled area with lattice strips to give it a picture frame look.
It might have looked better and gone faster if I had cut a shallow groove around the perimeter of the opening with a skilsaw, and used the neoprene cord to hold it.

Cheapest thing I can think of would be a roll of nylon screen and a frame made of lattice strips and staples.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

NGH & PowPow,

Thanks guys for the tips.  I will look into both solutions.  They sound very feasible.  I was looking to have the screens made and the quotes I was getting were incredible.  The lowest I could find was like $38 a window x 20 windows = $760 plus tax.  Seemed pretty high to me for window screens eventhough they will be 4'x4'.

I plan on making an outdoor pavillion type thing maybe next summer. I figure on doing it like Pow Pow said, just get a big roll of screen and staple it to a good weather resistant framework. I sure wouldn't pay exorbidant prices you were quoted.

I remember  when I was a kid and windows frames were still made from wood. Dad would make frames from 1x2's, put a 1/4" thick gusset of plywood on the corners and then paint the frames, then, would staple the screen to the frame, screen was still made from metal then also. he would keep them in place with the small formed sheetmetal latches that use a single screw for a pivot.
