Pack Weight?
« on: March 06, 2004, 05:21:28 AM »
I thought I would stop by and see how the campings goin'. I have a question regarding pack weight for children. Is there a rule of thumb to determine maxium pack weight for kids. I would imagine it's based on a percentage of total body weight, but I'm not sure. I'm a Scouter, and have concerns about the boys backpacking too much weight. Thanks for any help you might offer.

The boyscouts rule of thumb for pack weight is just 1/3 of the scout's body weight.  That's the BSA policy I learned years ago anyway.  That was with external frames and no concept of lightened or comfortable backpacking though.  A lot has changed over the years that's for sure!

I ain't carrying no 70 pound pack. :)

Things get tricky up here when you have to carry out a moose leg or something. I think I need to invest in a mule.

I'll bet a 1/4 to a 1/3 of a kid's total body weight would be a good guideline to go by. Some would be in better shape than others though. I'm revamping my think lately knowing lighter is better for me. I hate to see people loaded down like mules with a bunch of extra stuff that would have been better off left at home.
