Several years ago my father gave me his Remington model 760 30-06.  It was given to him when he was 24 yrs old (1967).  Over the 40 yrs he had it he has hunted with it in Alaska, Colorado, Texas, and Wyoming.  This rifle has brought down a moose, grizzly bear, elk, and numerous mule and white tail deer.  All without a single jam or malfunction.
Since I have had it, I have shot approximately 50 rounds through it without a single misfire, jam, etc. Because the rifle is in such good condition and has all the original working parts, I have seriouisly thought about just keeping it for "show and tell" and not taking it out to the deer woods.
With that being said, I am really interested in the 750 Woodmaster autoloader.  I have spent the past several hours going through different forums and websites and it appears many people have had some real issues with the magazine feed or ejection of a spent casing.  And of course there are some who love the gun and would not shoot anything else.  Either way I am definitely going to stay with a 30-06...
Any helpful suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • I feel much better now knowing it will get worse.
Not trying to be a wise guy here. Can you afford a BAR instead??
I'd wait another six months or so to save for the extra $ if I was in need of replacing my auto banger

get the pump, it can be used every where, just as fast with aimed shots and it can be used with low powered loads and less trouble with cleaning and operating in general. did i say i like pumps? eastbank.

Not quite as fast, I had both!
The felt recoil is lower for the auto and I have used some reduced loads(300 Savage level) that cycled just fine  because I don't need a full house load for close range deer hunting.
Cleaning is about the same PITA for both and with any firearm that can't be done from the breech side.

PS I had the barrel cut back to 18 1/2inch on my 742. It handles even better then before

Think if you read the gun forums you noted the problems with the 750 Auto jamming and also the repair .
Lately we do not seem to hear too much about the rifles any more . Either the problems have been resolved or not too many are being sold . Where I am from you- see them being offered in sales at reduced price.
PM some of the members that have the guns ,and get a more personal reply. You might get a bit more info , than what is written in the forums .
Then too I see a few Browning Short and long tract - reports of having feeding issues , mainly with the WSM .Why after about a half a year are some of these guns been traded back in ? They did not like the colour ? Some guys say they like the Bar , but not the weight .
Think the most important factor is the rifle you buy--- must fit you first , then look for the action and calipier you might be intersted . Take you time , since the gun must come up natural for you then , not to find this out later on a hunt of missed shot .
Every one seems to really like the 760 pump . the fit Etc. seems better than the 7600 model that replaced the 760 .
Having just bought aSYN. 7600 Carbine in '06 , I report the sample I have shoots very good with MOA groups and fit and finish is also very good.
So if your Dad got forty good years out of his gun before you got it - that would be enough of a statement to me.
Or is your preferance maybe in another action ? Well look at the bolt.

I've owned a 7400 and 7600, both in 30-06.

Without hesistation, I STRONGLY recommend the 7600 pump!

It is much more reliable and I believe, in general, more accurate.

Trust me there are far too many people who've experienced the reason why the 7400s are called Jam-O-matic!

I bought and recently just sold a 750 in 30-06.  I didn't sell it because it was a bad gun at all, but I'm getting more and more into longer range target shooting and needed to money more than the 750.  Mine was a 22" synthetic version and I never had the first problem with it.  I fired factory ammo from 150gr to 220gr, and also handloaded 220gr rounds without any feeding issues.  I bought 4 factory magazines, because I have heard of problems with them.  The first three worked so well I never even bothered taking the 4th one out of the packaging.  As far as accuracy goes I thought it was great.  Most ammo grouped just over an inch, which is a huge improvement over the 742, 7400 series in the past.

I was hesitant to buy the 750 at first because of the reliability and accuracy issues with the 7400 and earlier series, but my rifle never had any problems.  My vote is to definately buy the 750 in 30-06.  It's a fine rifle and semi auto action does take a lot of bite off the recoil.

Have you checked your state hunting regulations? Are you allowed to use a semi-auto?
