Remington Mohawk 48 semi-auto shotgun

There is a Remington Mohawk 48 Semi in good condition I want to buy and restore. Problem is, the previous owner carved his name in the receiver like an idiot. Not near or over any markings or engraving. I think I can grind it out until smooth with sandpaper & steel wool then re-blue. Shop is asking 150.00 but I am going to offer 100.00 cash . Appropriate or not?

I don't know how bad the marring is but the price is fairly reasonable, @$100.  That is the price my book,(older version) shows for poor condition.  That is assuming the Mohawk is the same as the M48.  I believe they were just a cheapened version with lesser wood stocks.  The M48's and 11-48's were a bit tempermental but ok shotguns..  They are not really collectable but would make a reasonable using gun..  Where and how deep was the name cut, and how?

gunnut69, His name is carved on the left side above where the  Mohawk 48 engraving is. Not close to existing engraving. I have been told not to pay over 75.00 since the guy carved on it. It looks like it was carved with a sharp nail or knive. Not as deep as factory engraving. I think I can sand then steel wool to smooth out then blue. Crazy or good deal?? Gun is going to be a shooter. Seems like a challenge, and a cheap one, thats why I want it. Never have owned one before.  Advice??

You can draw file the 'flat' of the receiver to remove the name scratched into it.  I've taken pits from 1100's that were deep that to draw file them out nearly removed the serial numbers.  After draw filing the name off the receiver can be polished with abrasive papers(be sure to use a backer to keep the edges from rounding) and either sent off to be reblued or just cold blued..  Brownells OxphoBlue is an excellant product.  Good wear properties and Fairly easy to apply.  Just depends on what you want to spend.
