Sportsmans Guide 1898 7mm mausers '95 actions
« on: October 28, 2010, 10:38:39 AM »
I just received a short barrel 1898 7mm mauser from sportsmans guide.  The stock is under very thick cosmoline but it seems to be all there and in good condition, but i'm not sure yet.  The metal is all white and thats ok.  I'll post more when i wash it up soon.

Cool.  8)  I bought one from them about 14 years ago, but stupidly sold it off.  I was disappointed when I found out after buying it 12 years ago that it was a small ring and restricted in loads.  Now I wish I still had it.  8(

Its never too late to get another one???

I think in the past few years the 7mm's are gaining ground in popularity and even maybe more popular over the 8mm's.  It could be us older collectors like them because there easy on the old battered bodies we have in recoil.   But i do notice that more 7's are turning up more and more as we look for them.  Some south americans are bringing a very high price too.  I try to stay in the reasonable area price wise.

My point is if you want to get a few 7mm's now is the time.

hey tacklebury???   Were can i get one of those 1911's that never runs out of ammo?  It always has 5 rounds in it?

Ok report #2

I ordered a m95 barreled receiver and got a m95 carbine with the stock, its the complete rifle but the orginal box is marked barreled action.  Trust me its no free bee for sure.

The stock seems to be very brittle on the outer layer so the stock is like unusable for what i want anyway.  For an orginal rifle it would be ok for a collectable antique and maybe its still shootable which my report on the bore will follow soon.  The hand guard is the most important thing to me.  It will fit the rear site perfectly in my build with my better stock.  I have a spanish stock thats pretty close to being perfect like 99.99%.  Its been cut down already for a 17" or 18" barrel.  So my m95 barreled action will be cut down soon so i can assemble it after bluing.  But i need to remove the stuck cleaning rod in the stock first.  The only rust i seen so far is were the receiver and trigger housing goes together.  It was hard to pop apart but it did pry apart with a little more pressure than usual.  I've seen south american rusted rifles before and this one looks ok compared to them.  The receiver, trigger guard and bolt  look great but the two release levers on the bands look to be a tad pitted but they may even clean u[p on the wire wheel before rebluing them. But all the screws did turn to take it apart as to where my VZ24 screws are rusted.

My bore report to follow soon. So far its not that bad but its much better than my VZ24 7mm carbine that i got from century arms. I won't call it a good condition yet its not a fair condition its inbetween as to where my VZ24 was acutally in poor----- condition.

Go to;  www.sportsmansguide.com   then search "1898" all the mausers will appear.

Don't buy them all now I may want to get more soon.  These are '95 actions which are stronger than the '93's.

The bore looks great with some decent rifling still exposed.  She should make an awesome barreled action for my carbine project.  since its still in the stock with the cleaning rod stuck(threads).  I soaked it with PB blaster so it should loosen up soon.

The '95 has the third lug as a safety yet the power is right in there with the lower side of the 303, 308, 7.62x54r but very close to the swede in performance too.  I think its a very doable caliber to play with in there old irons.  We just can't load it to the modern specs. I'm lucky enough to have some of the older surplus FN ammo for it too.

I'm not sure of the conditions of the 95's with stocks in the carbines and longer 29" barrels.  My stock wasn't that bad for being its age but i would think the complete rifles would be a tad better in condition.  I'm still impressed with the rifling and the condition of the bore.  We need to deceide wether to go after the 95 chileans that are out there or thye ones from SPG.  Price wise there close but the conditions may cary.  I'm thinking of 1 or 2 more from SPG.

sog has '98 czech rifles available for <$200 in 7mm and they're c&r eligible. i got one and after some serious cleaning, it is quite nice. '98s cock on opening and handle a blown primer/case much better than '93's or '95s.

there's nothing wrong with a chilean '95...but sportsman's guides prices are pretty steep. invest in a 3-year c&rffl for $30, send copies to sog, aim, century, etc. and save lots of $$$.

I have my C&RFFL for 10+ years now, i'll checkout sog too. We can't have too many 7mm's.

I purchased a czech VZ24 7mm from century a while back for $169.  These are rated good but mine wasn't good at all.  The bore looks frosted/little corrosion but it should shoot ok.  When the time comes and it isn't accuarte i may recrown it and bore lap it. But i have seen bad bores shoot good too who knows till we shoot it.

I may try another from sog and i can replace the barrel anyhoo.

Budman;  Your right i slept on this thought lastnite and i think a VZ24(98) in 7mm (another one) just maybe for me to shoot/hunt and play with.  The 93's, 96's & 95's are for builds for the grandsons with them being younger and the rifles being smaller and lighter for them. I been buying the bubba 96's and either restoring them to there orginal condition or plan on building shorter carbines for the youngsters.  No complete surplus collectable guns were harmed in any way to make carbines.  There are non valued bubba guns that are being worked on.

My last update on the 95 barreled receiver from SPG.  Of course i did the bullet in the muzzle test just yesterday.  I should of done it right away.  The bullet goes almost flush with the muzzle.  This tells me that some counter boring maybe needed if i left it in its orginal state or it still may shoot ok with just a little cleanup recrowning.  Since this one will be cut down for one of my projects i'm still ok.
