sure glad you are ok man,   looking at the pics though i highly doubt a bore obstruction.   it looks to me that the ejector wasnt supporting the case ahead of the web,   causing that round to peel open under pressure.   ive seen similar kinds of case seperation in unsupported chambers of some auto loading pistols.   thats why they dont recommend reloads for them at all.   for what its worth when you are checking again make sure that there isnt any open space between the back of the ejector and the notch in the barrel

There are lots of things that it could have been, like a 60-70 grain bullet in the same box, bullet touching lands, ect. ect. I just hope everyone that finds the need to load up the .45-70 to Ruger #1 levels notices, that there is no where for the gas to go that will not cause pain for the shooter if he is lucky.

CW,

Glad you escaped on that one!  I have a thought on something that might have contributed but probably isn't the main culprit.  I have noticed on a couple of  my Handis there is a fair amount of up & down play on the ejector/extractor when it is seated.  On the order .01 to .015 inch.  I am getting ready to make and JB weld shims to the bottom of the these extractors to remove this play as it does leave the bottom of the case unsupported.  I guess in some respects this play in the extractor is a bit of an unintended safety feature as it directs the hot gas down instead of letting it find another exit point closer to your face.

FWIW, I loaded a pound of 1978 vintage H4064 powder this summer and shot all the rounds out of my two 30-06s without issues.  Did you keep all the FMJ cases and look at them too see if they might give you a clue.

Good luck and be safe.
