Finally set some coyote traps
« on: November 14, 2010, 03:35:13 PM »
I finally got some coyote sets out late this afternoon.I setup a big pasture with a waterhole.I have the travelways covered good.I set more traps in this pasture than I normally would. The landowners have had coyote problems and want them gone.It looks like the coyote family units are still together from the tracks I saw. There is a banquet of good smelling stuff and a minefield of steel traps guarding the banquet. Now we wait for them to come through.Life is always better when your setting coyote traps.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

I got the first six coyote sets out yesterday and we got light rains off and on all day. Connected on one male coyote in a flat set. 3 of the sets I made were snares in crawl unders. My buddy had to run the sets today and he didn't have the equipement on him to remake the set. I'm thinking that with the rain they're calling for here in the next couple of days I might break out the waxed dirt to keep the sets from getting soaked in the day and freezing at night.

I used peat moss as my antifreeze method.I didn't top dress one set deep enough and had wind blow some of the covering off the trap.I had one trap snapped by a deer. It's weird the ground didn't absorb much moisture.A 1/4 inch down the soil is still dry.It snowed this morning, the ground is covered. There are whitetail deer moving every where. They were by all my sets and some were still in the pasture when I pulled in.
