New to my encore clue me in on this crud ring
« on: November 16, 2010, 10:59:51 AM »
I shoot mostly a renagade and white mountain carbine.I pick up a encore and was shooting it the other day, and after one shot when I went to swap between shots The jag hit a dead end.If I went to far I could not pull it out and had to remove breach plug and push it out from rear.Is this common? Is there something else I should be doing?Seems to me a follow up shot in the field would be a problem....ED

Ahha the dreaded crud ring, you must be shooting 777 pellets, eh? i have the same problem with my encore when I shoot 777 pellets. I don't know if the loose 777 powder does the same or not, I have never tried the powder. I would shoot then swab with a very wet patch of half alcohol and window cleaner (the blue stuff). I would run my jag w/ patch down the barrel and when I would get close to the "CRUD" ring I would chip in to it a little at a time until I broke thought it, but, a wet patch helped alot. I would then run two or three dry patches to get the barrel really dry before I would load it again.  I could load it a couple of times before I had to clean it, though. I think the accuracy suffered from the dirty Barrel, too! I got sick of swabbing that crap out of there all the time.
I finally got smart and bought some Blackhorn 209, it cost a little more, but, man it's worth it. It's clean, no swabbing between shots, that makes it worth the little extra money right there, and boy does it shoot good. 100 grains and a barnes 250 grain TMZ with a harvester crush rib sabot (yellow one) for boat tail bullets, because the TMZ is a boat tail type bullet and the crush rib loads a heck of alot easier in those tight Encore barrels than the factory sabot that comes with the Barnes. It's pretty accurate, also. I have my Encore two inches high at 75 yards, but, the grouping is like a clover leaf. Do yourself a favor and try some of that there Blackhorn stuff you'll love it, Dude.

It is common with 777 pellets and loose.  There are some things you can do about it like less powerful primers like the 777ML primers or a different breach plug that uses a small rifle or pistol primer.

The problem I had with the 777ML primers is they did not seem to seal the plug as well and then I got lots of blowback that then started getting in the firing pins and then they started sticking and needed cleaned way to often.

I got rid of my Encore, but my wife still has one and the Blackhorn seems to cure all the above problems from the limiting testing we have done.  It is just too bad the Blackhorn is so expensive and hard to find.

I've never had problems with sticking. But using 777 primers I did have lots of blow back which was a mess. With the standard win. 209 primers I don't have that problem. The crud ring I take care of with a spit patch and a couple of dry patchs!!

2 steps to solving your problem.

1. Use the triple 7 to salt your driveway.
2. Purchase blackhorn 209.

It's pricey and what you hear about it is NOT hype. I use it in my encore and am VERY satisfied with the results. Good accuracy, but simple cleanup. Not crud ring, no swabbing, no baloney.

Agree 100%. Just started using BH209 in my Encore this season. No more blowback and sticking firing pins.

Once you go Blackhorn you'll never go back... I was resistant to give up the T7 because I have 2 pounds of it yet, but soooo glad I did! Better groups, no more water baths, no more crud rings, no more 25acp's to deal with.  I've shot over a dozen times w/out cleaning and the slug pushed just as it did on shot 1.
