new to me 243 HVY
« on: November 20, 2010, 08:52:57 AM »

Just got this after piece by piece buying on here. The three holes were the first shots fired.I was aiming at the center dot.The holes(5) around the dot are after tweaking the scope. All at 100 yds.I was using rem 100 gr.corlocks.The target on the right is six shots with Fed 100 gr.Didn't care for them at all.Now I'll wait for a colder day to see how a cold barrel will shoot.Didn't do that last year with my 270 Handi and missed the biggest deer on the place. Here she is.

CONGRATULATIONS, you have yourself shooter there!!!

I just put mine together today as well!!

I have had the barrel as a combo with my 308 for a couple years. But little by little I have been buying frames to make complete guns. The 243 got itself a frame just this AM!!! Now I need to go shoot mine and see if it shoots as well on its new frame!!

I've got a 243 ultra varmint at my dealer waiting for me to pay it off. It's got the cinnamon lams stocks and heavy barrel. I'm hoping it's gonna be a good shooter like that.

Spanky,I have a set of cin lams too.Made this gun very, very heavy.I put them on when i have the 270 barrel on.They do help soak up the recoil on it.It seems to really kick with the 270.My old 760 270 is a sweetheart to shoot. Now if it will just shoot like this when it's cold outside. The first shot really cold barrel needs to hit where I aim it.Hope it does.Should be able to try it this turkey day.Only going to be in the teens in the am.Only a week and a half until opening day.
Off topic-Had a doe get hit right in front of the house last night. One of the three that's been in my back yard off and on for the last two weeks.Had a basket eight out there the first of the week.He was camera shy though.Couldn't get him to hang around long enough for a pic.

Not trying to hijack but want to ask a question about the 243 BB.
Now that I traded my 22-250 my 243 ultra varmint if going to be my primary varmint rifle. I plan on pillar bedding the forearm and using a bipod for most of my shooting. I'd like to use either 58 or 65gr. vmax's in it. Do any of you guys shoot these bullets and how do they perform.

Spanky,
I have used the Nosler 70 gr ballistic tip to great accuracy and performance. As a varmint bullet but not for pelts. For this the Sierra 85 HP has proven better. But coyote hunting for me is very much like deer hunting as we just don't have allot of long range propositions here in CT. I have shot more coyotes with my bow than firearms lately!!! Wafted the season my Savage 23 in 25-20 gets drug around quite abit!!
As you know by and large I'm not a light bullet guy but fully understand the reasons for thief use in certain applications. I watch Predator Quest on TV and Les Johnson has used some of the bullets your asking about with great success.

Hey Slow, just make sure you arent shooting it with a clean barrel for that first shot, unless, of course, you have proven to yourself, beyond a doubt, that it will go where you want from the cold, clean barrel and still be good for 'follow ups'.
