are there any low recoil 20 ga??

     I have a neighbor who has a son that is rather small. I would like to let him start shooting my 20 ga after I put a youth stock on it but I don't want to turn the boy off of shooting or have him start flinching right off. I'd like to find some field loads that have a low recoil for him to start on. Any help here ?

I don't know if they make 20's, but Aquila makes a low velocity shell for a 12 that my grandson, (age 8, 65#), shoots ok.  They are about half the length of a standard shell, and I believe they were made for increasing the capacity of self defense shotguns, but they work great for this.  If they make 20's that would be even better.

Failing that, put some weight in the stock, via a lead filled sock, etc. and that will minimize the recoil somewhat.

   Thanks Ben, I have some of those little short shells. Now that you mention it I think they might kick less than a standard 20 ga field loads.

Has the boy done any shooting on a .410 or .22 yet? I'm not sure if there are any 20 gauge factory loads light enough that I'd start a boy off shooting with. Even a 7/8 oz. might scare a kid even he doesn't have a lot of experience. All kids are different, my 8 year old son is afraid of shooting his .410 Versa Pack but my friend's 8 year old son has no problem shooting a 20 and even took a turkey with it this year. Use your best judgment.

Fiocchi makes a load they call the 20lite75 it is a 3/4 oz 7.5 at 1075 fps they also call it the trainer it is the lightest loading I have found without reloading hope this helps

I bought a box of the Fiocchi loads kaveman mentioned from Midway a couple years ago just to try them.

They really are light recoiling.  I think they kick less than a .410.

Not what you asked for, but good hearing protection can help minimize the blast of that 20. Might take some of the intimidation out of it. I just let my kid (10) try out my 12 gauge yesterday. Just shooting low brass field loads. He thought it was a hoot!. And he is rather small. But today he was muttering something about a bruised shoulder today. But he went darn near threw a box of shells in 20 minutes.

   We're open to different things. My son just bought a .410 to help with  the training. I guess it's onward and upward from there.
