Da tirty eight fifty five is gonna get wet
« on: November 14, 2010, 05:48:51 AM »
Well Tim, the little girl is going out first thing in the morning.  The weather prognosticator is talking about rain all week.  It's gonna be a miserable hunt.  Gotta make venison quick and get back to the warm dry meat room. ;)  I'm eager to go, and she's ready.  I'm gonna follow your example and shoot the 213s.  She seems to like them.  Jeff Davis sent me a bunch of lubed, cast .379s I'm going to play with.....Thanks Jeff.  And thank you again, Tim.  That rifle is a little beauty.  I'll have to keep a diaper on her this week ::)

Good luck Pete, be sure to take your camera and gets some pics for the hunt report!!  ;)

The .379" may bump up if they're soft enough and you shoot they fast enough, but .380" hard cast key holed in mine.  :-\

Tim, I'm only gonna blow up jugs, porcupines, woodchucks etc. with them.  They don't have to be super accurate, and are welcome to keyhole.  They're just to have fun and go "Bang" with.  They're not gas checked, so I don't think I want to run them too hot.

Pete,

Got your alarm clock set for tomorrow AM?

That quick fellow is good guy to have around.  You are deer hunting with a rifle he helped you to put together and I am going out on opening day in Ohio with 355 grain bullets that he sent me.

Good luck tomorrow and stay safe.

That 38-55 is a nice little varmint cartridge......soon as I bag a rabbit with mine it will officially be my 'Rook & Rabbit' gun, though Im thinking of renaming it a .380 Extra Long Nitro. A nice companion for my big game .577 Snider. It is quite a striking comparison when I set the three of my favorites, a .22LR, 38-55 and .577 side by side.

Tim, thems is funny lookin bullet holes.  I've got the meat room all cleaned out and sanitized, the barn's free of mice and voles, and the rifle is waterproofed as well as possible and waiting for the morning.  I'm really pumped about getting a deer with this truely Handi little .38-55.  I can't wait to post.  I've got two very special buddies with me in the morning.  Eugene Salter, he plays in the band with Patty and has been a really good friend for 20 years, and Todd Miller, our neighbor and Managing Forester.  They'll be here for coffee and doughnuts at six.  Todd will be shooting a Handi 280.  Eugene has my Marlin 336 tirty tirty.  He's a levergun guy, and his old Ted Williams has a loose sight, so he's useing one of mine.  It is already a great hunt.....because of the companionship.  I'd like us to get venison, but it doesn't mean squat didly if we don.t.

Thanks Tim, I'll keep ya posted.

I just took the little girl out on the back porch to make sure she was ready for tomorrow.  I put a Clorox jug out at about 80 yards.  Shot, nothing happened.  Shot again and again....nothing.  I said, "Oh crap", or words to that affect.....  A neighbor came and dropped off documents for Patty.  I went down there to see where my bullets were going, thinking I was going to scrap the .38-55 for the morning.  The jug was shredded.  Every round dead center.  I haven't a clue why it didn't blow up, but in an emergency, ya could use it for a strainer.  Most of the holes are too big for that though.

What's your load Pete?  ??? I'm betting they're too slow to expand much, mine at 2200fps expand to ¾" in a 10" alder from 10'.

Tim, it's your RL7 load under the 213s.  I can shoot 260 gr. gas checked with about the same accuracy....MOD at any rate.  Tim, a ten inch tree is a lot tougher than a deer, and isn't gonna let the bullet expand.  There's a lot of side pressure there too.  You smacked your doe in the neck with that load and she didn't test your tracking skills.

Patty and I are wishing you the best of Luck.

Last time you mentioned the RL7 you didn't have it yet, glad ya got it, that load will work great on a deer, it put a thumb size exit hole on my doe, no blood shot meat at all, Jack's 270Win wasted about 10lbs of neck meat on a similar shot!  :o The 260gr GC bullets wouldn't expand much if any, but I'd bet they'd still work fine.

Best of luck to you too DP!!  ;)

Well, it didn't rain, but I didn't see anything but a strange gray squirrel.  He was the size of a red.  I took off to the bank at noon to make a deposit, and on the way back almost had a big doe, a yearling and two fawns in my truck grill.

Better luck next time Pete, sounds like a lot of our hunts, saw nothing shootable, right down to the grilled doe!! Last week Jack and I made our last trip to the river for steelhead and salmon, on the way up the road that parallels the river traveling at about 45-50mph we were following a fella in a Ford F150, a doe ran in front of him causing him to slow down, we did also, then right in front of us from out of the darkness a 3 point (6 point eastern) buck ran right out in front of us causing me to make the hardest panic stop I've made in many years, I thought for sure I was gonna hit him, in fact I at least expected to make contact with his hooves as he cleared the front bumper, but we made it and he got away! :o ;D

Eugene isn't with me this morning.  His brother nailed a deer with his car last night and they are out trying to find that one.  He saw a deer last evening that he thinks was last year's Mr. Sheds....looking like a ten point.  He couldn't make a shot though.

I think I'm gonna put a cow catcher on the front of my pickup.  We've been here 20 years and never hit a deer.  I gotta believe the odds are running out.  I've had about a half million close calls.  Two in the past week.

Nice duds Richard!   ;D

Thanks!  I got my self all prettied up in my Sunday go to meetin' cloths just for that picture!   ;D

Y'all have fun... I feel a trip to the barber shop coming sometime around Christmas!   ;D  That'll be my present to Kathie.   :D

Richard,

I think we have the same hair program, my last hair cut was 12/27/2009.  Wife keeps telling me to get a haircut and I tell her I will as soon as I go back to work - I am on permanent disability.  She misses most of my attempts at humor. ::)

It doesnt much matter if you get your venison with the car or gun, they eat the same, as long as that deer grill guard holds up and you dont smash the meat up too bad. In that regard I am not sure just how much impact speed really does that??? It certainly fullfills my 'slow speed brick' preference.

My Dad hit an 80lb doe 40yrs ago, he was mad that it messed the front of his R8 Renault up, fortunately it was still drivable and he wasn't hurt, the deer died on impact, he took the deer home hoping for some compensation in the form of venison, the entire impact side of the deer was all bloodshot and not fit for even burger, the offside was ok tho.
