Introduction
« on: November 17, 2010, 08:14:42 AM »
Hello all! I’ve been lurking here for a while and see there are some hog hunters on the board. I ran into some pigs this year while bowhunting but I don’t have a clue for the best way to hunt ‘em. I guess I should introduce myself before firing away with questions though.

Names Puck. Yea I’m a hockey fan. Blue Jackets fan in particular but I chose the handle because a puck is something that gets slapped around a lot but never seems to get hurt or get any smarter. I think we have a lot in common. Anyhow I’m retired now but I don’t get out as much as I would like. It seems I had more time for the outdoors when I was working but I suspect the reason was more money. Just the way it is. Anyway I’ve been married to the same woman for all of my life that I can remember and we raised two children and we have four grand children now as well. Man did they get lucky ;).  I’m proud of all and I guess I’ve been pretty lucky too!

Like most I have a lot of different interests in the outdoors but bow hunting for deer and archery in general are my primary interests. It’s been that way for a long time. It seems that any time I’m in the woods the reason for it becomes secondary to scouting. Even when driving around I’m watching the field edges and wood lines knowing that it’s all private land and I’ll never get a chance to hunt it. I can’t help it. Anyway In years past I’ve ran traps, hunted small game, and fished here in Ohio as well as some in Indiana, Michigan and a few other states as well as  a couple of trips into Canada. Now I mostly hunt for deer but I chase turkey, squirrels, and coyotes here as well. I play around a bit with muzzleloaders, small caliber centerfires, and handguns too. When I wet a line I’m mostly after crappies or bluegills but this year wasn’t the first one that I bought my license and didn’t go fishing at all. After running into the hogs earlier this fall I’ve been thinking about hunting them as well. But that’s another post and this is getting’ a bit long… Lookin’ forward to talkin’ to and learnin’ from y’all…

Welcome Puck and sounds like you will fit right in here!

Whereabouts were you seeing those hogs? Some of us have been interested hunting them in Ohio but very few have even seen any.

Thanks for the welcome!

Joe the hogs were in Vinton co. not far from Lake Hope. Truth is I really didn't see 'em but there's no doubt in my mind what was there. I was hunting a bench and I could hear 'em in the leaves not far below me but just out of sight. Later in the morning when things settled I walked down to where they were rooting around and the smell was unmistakable. I've been hunting the area for a long time. About 15+/- years ago one of the guys in our group saw a pig there but nothing after that till now.

Welcome aboard. We missed this year, but the guys from Ohio have been getting together for a shoot and bull session every summer so if you can make next years you will have a chance to meet some of the guys here on the board.

I have talked to several ODNR guys and they all swear that some hogs escaped a hunting ranch and those were the ones everyone talked about for awhile...until they got them all. I am talking about the counties adjacent to the national forest in the south eastern part of Ohio.

We've heard about the escaped hogs as well Joe. It was probably true. Whether or not the ones I encountered were from that stock or not I can't say.  Here's a couple of links from the dnr web. Check out the distribution map.

Thanks for the invite Catfish!

Hi Puck,

Welcome.  You huntin' private land in Vinton or Zaleski St. Forest?  I've been huntin' the "Forest" for over 20 years, some years are productive other years are not.  I really like the scenery in Vinton Co. and the folks that live & work in that county.  Maybe I will see you at the check in station north of Zaleski on 278.  Good luck in the woods this year.

Thanks again for the welcome guy's!

Bikerbeans I'm hunting public land and usually stay at Lake Hope. The hunting hasn't been so great for the last few years but we like it there and the people are great as well. That said we just got back from a sucessful deer hunt and are going to the processor and taxidermist later this morning. My oldest grandson got a nice 11 pointer. I'm not good at judging but my guess is he will score in the 130's. Should know more later today and will try to post some pics....
