Ithaca Mag 10 question
« on: November 30, 2010, 02:05:41 PM »
I just bought an Ithaca mag 10 shotgun, it has a standard 32" full choke barrel. My question is this, has anyone worked with one of these and steel shot? I am wondering if there is too much choke for steel pellets. Would larger steel pellets, like BBB, react poorly? Is there any chance of damage to the barrel? I know it is modern steel but again, there is a lot of choke. I am waiting on delivery and will mic the barrel when it arrives. I will consider having it cut to 28" or 30" and screw choked, might even decide to remove some of the choke and test it. I once had a close friend who did some amazing things with one of these and 2 oz of lead 2s. Shotgunner

While my 10 ga is not an Ithaca I too have full and full chokes on 32 inch barrels.  mine is a Side by Side.
I tried some steel and it worked, much of the steel now is made with a very thick spongy pettle wad to protect the barrels for scoring and to align the shot and not have it squeeze through and bounce all over the place.
I found that the Bizmouth shot in #2 wokes best for me.
expensive but I think it is cheaper in the long run with a dead bird for ever 1.5 shells as opposed to the steel being about 1 for 3 shells.

Steel 2's will probably be OK but the bigger stuff I would stay away from. Choke of Imp/Mod or Mod will give much better performance in your older gun.I'm just not sure anymore but the Remington 10ga barrel may swap out.I don't remember any barrel change when Remington took over building that gun

I can't believe this but I sold a 10ga barrel less then a year ago. I bought 25 shotgun barrels at an auction, some of them very cheap, and did not think I would need a 10ga. I am not positive but I think it was an Ithaca barrel that was already shortened and choked. It will cost more then I got to make another one. Shotgunner
