M77 Question

Are the rifles that take regular scope bases rare?  What years were they made?

The 77ST (round top, sights) is not common.  I think about 5 to 10 percent of tang safety Rugers I see are the ST model.  My references aren't handy but it was made for 10-15 years, in the 70's and 80's, IIRC.


The 77PL (round top, no sights) is very rare.  I've never seen one.

You would be better off with a 700 Rem Swampy. Those Ruger all shoot lousy and the scopes fall off those stupid dovetails all the time. I keed, I keed, I just could not resist. Back to the previous OP question...

My experience with Ruger 77's is about the same.  I once owned three of them (.223; .243; .30-06).  I have owned Savages, Remingtons, and a Sears (Winchester manufactured) which all shot well...but the Ruger's for some reason were the hardest firearms for me to zero in...and I love the concept of having a receiver set up for their rings.  This was over ten years ago...I am told that Ruger has improved their barrels but...I will stick with those that work.

I own quite a few rugers and they are, by far, the guns i own with the MOST $$ in smthing....mostly new barrels.

My old tang safety M77 in 30-06 was a great gun. It did need to be glass bedded and the barrel free floated. But most bolt guns do. The trigger on mine was pretty darn good too after adjustment.
I prefer the Mark II over the tang safety. I was always sliding the safety off, by accident, when carrying it with gloves on.
I don't think I have ever seen a M77 without the intergral scope base........I don't get out much!
