Factory Round/Barrel for Encore Pistol for 200 yd . Elk/Hogs
« on: December 11, 2003, 06:38:03 AM »
My Encore in 308 is shooting great, but I want to bump up to a heavier round for Elk Size game and Texas hogs at 200 or so yards.
I need to stay with factory available ammo, as I don't have the time for reloading.
Would the 300 Win Mag be my best choice?
Does anyone have experience with some other options, that still have factory ammo available?
I would also be interested if a brake or porting would be necesary on a 300.  I would like to avoid extra noise and blast, but I still want an accurate shooter.

Thanks,

Kevin

I can't speak for the elk, but your 308 should be just fine for the hogs. If a 7x30 in the Contender will do it, so can the 308 (and then some).

With a properly constructed bullet put in the right place, I doubt any elk at 200 yards could tell the difference between a 308 and a 300 Win Mag.  Same with hogs.

I shoot both  300WinMag and 338WinMag Encores. Both do have muzzle brakes and are 15". There are several guys around here that shoot the 300WinMags in pistol form. We get 2900fps+ with 150gr bullets and 2800fps+ with 165gr bullets. to me the 300 with a brake is easier to handle than a 30-06 without. My 338 has turned into my favorite, shooting 180gr Nosler BTs at 2800fps+. With a brake it is easy to shoot without a brake it gets your attention. All barrels are MOA accurate. While the 308 would probably work just fine it never hurts to have a new barrel to play with.

Good luck with whatever you decide,
Ronnie

Although I do not have this caliber, one that looks interesting for your application would be the .350 Remington Magnum. It seems to be a rather efficient round and should perform well out of the Encore.

i think your .308 would do the trick, but a 300 mag heavy rifle barrel, cut down to 16"-17", and using the rifle forend would be a great setup. they look nice that way! you can't have too many, buy another! :)

Your 308 will work under 200 yards for elk.

Flatlander, what part of the state do you live in?

South of Wichita. But I head out west for deer, usually. Where are you at?
