Handi SB1 PSI for quickload purposes?
« on: November 22, 2010, 05:50:16 AM »
What pressure would one use when developing Quickload data for a handirifle?

I have a rechambered SB1 30-30 in 30-40 Krag and want to use quickload to get data for Reloder 17
and to see what other powders might do best.

When I have had it done for other bolt action chamberings, the program used 62000 psi as the max.

You CANNOT run pressures that high on an SB1 frame.
62,000 PSI is about 20,000 higher than what is safe on that frame.

This does get confusing. I would imagine that many older pre-bancrutcy Toppers/Combos are floating around in 30-30 Win. I know that I still use mine with the lighter weight bullets that loads are outlined for along with the pressures in Hodgdons #26 manual.

Converting psi to CUP or vice versa is also somewhat murky.

Also did the sb1 frame ever come from the factory chambered in 30-30? Do you have the older Topper from the Mid 80's and older? Maybe someone "fitted" that barrel to the sb1 receiver? Or do you have a pre 1996 NEF offering? Lots of variables here.

Of course.

The barrel came on an SB2 frame which I still have. So I would be interested in PSI figures for each.
Just wanted to know what reasonable pressures would allow it's use on an SB1 frame. It is fun
just to figure out how many ways things can be used.

Best I can say is the factory has tested and offers the SB1 with 44mag barrels, that's a .457" case head(same as Krag) at 36kpsi max average pressure per SAAMI. Lilja spells out how to calculate bolt(breech) thrust, now all you have to do is figure out what the heck the SAAMI spec in PSI is for the Krag, Quickload lists it at 47137 Piezo CIP which isn't the same as CUP or SAAMI PSI, SAAMI lists it at 40kcup. Best advice is forget the SB1 and just use the SB2 frame, SB1 frames aren't heat treated, they're just ductile cast iron unlike the heat treated investment cast alloy steel of the SB2.

Thanks,

Figuring that all out sounds like more "fun" than it is worth. How about on the SB2 frame?
What are people using for Quickload with a Handirifle?

Depends on the case head size, the 270Win is a factory offering, .470" case head at a SAAMI MAP of 65kpsi looks good to me, but 60kpsi with a 30-06 size case head is a usable figure. Bigger case head, lower pressure, the 500S&W is another factory offering, ~.526" case head depending on what drawing you use, a SAAMI MAP of 60kpsi, but the highest data I've seen is 53kpsi.
