why beavers dig holes?
« on: November 21, 2010, 06:47:37 PM »
I'v been trying to get a shot at a beaver, and I noticed that it digs holes about 6 inches deep and about 7 or 8 inches across. It doesn't fill them in or anything.  Can anyone tell me why they do this?  Thanks

 Barber,what state are you from?
Hard to say why it is digging holes, never really noticed this in the areas I am in.
They may be looking for gold or certain roots. I know they feed on cat tail roots, but I am not sure what they are after.

Tom your killing me!I snorted coffee all over the keyboard when I read the "looking for gold" comment.barber I've never seen beaver in my area dig holes like you describe.I have seen old, partially caved in bank dens but that's about it.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

Thanks. Some of these holes are in the sand that built up before we tore up the dam. the others are up on the bank.  There are just weeds growing there, I guess it could be for roots. I didn't know beaver ate roots, but there's a lot I don't know,   Thanks for the answers.

Its possible that they are digging out areas in order to build castor mounds in a nearby location.

They also dig holes into the sides of creek or river banks to build their dens.
