16 GA Topper Barrel - fitting
« on: December 08, 2010, 02:11:46 AM »
Hey Guys

I am new to the forum, glad to find you as it has been tough to find info for these H & R's.

To my question. I have a 2010 slug gun and found a used barrel 16 ga from a H & R Topper. I do not know the year of the barrel. I assume the barrel is older than 1987 which they state on the H & R web site for fitting of barrels. Will this be fit-able to my reciever?

The barrel has also been cut to 24". Is this done by the original owner to remove the choke and make it Cyl? For close shooting or bush work?

Anyone know were 16 ga barrels can be found? I have loads of 16 ga ammo from another shot gun and would love to have this as a safe single shot.

Thanks for any help!!

Does the barrel say Topper 88 on the side?

The original owner probably cut it down to shoot Foster slugs out of it, you're correct about it being a cyl bore now. You could always have it threaded for choke tubes if you want to use it at longer ranges. You will love the 16. They are tough to find since H&R stopped making them.

I have the Tracker ll. I love it. The boys are getting Pardners 20 ga mod. for Chrismas. They will be mighty surprised and pleased! 12 and 14 year olds. Is it just mass. or are the H & R's getting hard to find. Had to travel several hundred miles to find these.

I take it the barrels havent changed and will pickup the 16 ga. Maybe have it tapped for chokes. I grew up with 16 ga like the round sorry to see them go .......

16 ga. barrels are scarce as hen's teeth.  Proud you were able to find one.  I am still looking.  There are a few folks still hanging on to the 16 and using them.  I picked up an old single shot for my first experience with one.  Boy was I surprised and pleased.  More reach than a 20 and a lot less recoil than a 12.  Easy to carry and comes to the shoulder like it was made for me.  It is my dedicated squirell medicine.  I do perfer the Handi action with the release next to the hammer.  I was so disappointed when I found out H&R had discontinued them.  But I will continue to be ever watchful for a used one or a used barrel.  if your barrel is an 88 it should match up with little or no modifications.  Just check the FAQ's.

Thanks for the info. I will be waiting for the Barrel to show up. I am having it sent to me as I do not have time to make the drive. I am currently shooting (in 16ga) a 1957 Mossberg 16ga bolt action. Love the round but the gun is a loaner from a friend. I may be able to keep the Mossberg for an indefinite period of time but, I like the safe action of the H & R ( have to cock the hammer) and the trigger setup (hanging on the plunger/firing pin) on this old Mossberg has me feeling a little shake-y hunting with the kids.

Got the barrrel, when it shows for $54, what is the going prices for old used barrels?

By the way I just sent back my Tracker ll for a new barrel. I ordered a 20 Ga., 28" Vent rib, Screw-in choke (Mod). I hope the 24" 16 ga, with its essentially Cyl choke, to be my Pheasant gun. Stocked pheasant here in MA, some times you need to kick'm to get them to fly  ??? The new barrel will be for rabbit, grouse, wood cock, squirrel and some time pheasant as well. Any thoughts on the chokes? I am just getting though the other threads ......
