Elk caliber
« on: December 11, 2003, 10:00:05 AM »
I am looking for a encore pistol for primarily deer hunting in upstate NY.  However, there is a chance to do an Elk hunt in the future and I would like a caliber that could do both.  I am looking at the .270 since 95% would be deer hunting.  Will the .270 scoped do the job on an Elk out to 300 yards and less.  Also, I can't seem to find the encore .270 is SS, is it possible to get one is SS (if so where and how much)?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the .270 Winchester for those applications. For elk, I'd use a 150gr. bullet if at all possible. See your local dealer for a frame. Then check outlets like Midway, Eabco, M&M, Bullberry, VVC, OTT, Fox Ridge, etc. for a barrel.

Now why in the world would you do that when we have Ed of Ed's Contenders as a sponsor of this site? He has more barrels than any of those folks. Iffen ya want a barrel Ed should be your first stop.

270 will do just fine for what you want.  With the 06/284 case capacities you could start as low as 25 caliber on up, and do the job you are wanting quite nicely.

Have to agree with Joe Mack...the .270 will get the job done.  Always had better accuracy with the 150 grainers, and a bit more knowkdown when compared to the 130 grainers.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)
