what is the difference between the 2 calibers and can you shoot them both from a handi rifle

virtually identical slight difference in chamber pressures. I think a handi will shoot either/both.

I've shot both in my bull barrel, but stay away from the steel case, unless you want to spend a lot of time bumping out stuck cases ???

The US mil spec. chambers and shoots ok in mine, but with the slow twist I have, it stabilizes smaller bullets better.

Mine shoots Tula steel case with no issues. Incredible groups too. 1MOA with blasting ammo. Now my steel case reloads, that is another story. They shoot fine, but they load hard. Shaving primers and jacketed bullets. Tula is boxer primed with sealant, no crimp if you want to try it.

Mine is an older 1/12 cut into a shorty. I load 50 and 55 grain for it.

At one time H&R had said NOT to shoot 5.56 ammo in the Handi rifles , not sure if that still applies with Remington owning them now .

The only real difference between a 223 Rem round and a 5.56 NATO round is the pressure that it is loaded at and the leade of the throat cut in the chamber .

The 5.56 has a higher pressure and a longer leade .

I would not shoot surplus 5.56x45 ammo out of any .223 sporter, to include the Handi Rifle.  The chamber throat area is different and can cause excessive pressure to develop.

If you want to do this, then buy/rent this: Neck and Throat 5.56 Reamer.

Ammo is cheap, when compared to a rifle.

Isnt the stell case Tula ammo made to .223 specs?  The box is definitely labeled .223 as opposed to 5.56.  I would think this would make it safe to shoot in a .223 chambered rifle.  Can someone verify if this is the case or not?
