I got one for a great price. I know now why it was so cheap. The scope base screws were loose

Featherweight stock for it is on order.

I need to order the metal bits too.

I hope it does better than the 223 wssm Super Shadow I had.
I am a die hard Winchester man and if Winchester had made a gun with a bent barrel, I would have had to try it!
The one I had was a piece of junk as a varmint gun!!!
Barrel was way to light for that caliber.
After two shots you couldn't hold your hand on the barrel.
First two shots printed about .5" to .75" with factory Win ammo, not bad but the third would open to 1.75" and forget a forth shot.
Over 2" and you could see the heat waves off the barrel.
The 300wsm should do better in that it most likely won't get shot more than two rounds at a time, being a large caliber.
Just don't go varmint hunting with it where you will get lots of shots quickly.

Glad I saw your response. I was looking at one in 223. I too noticed the ultra thin barrel. Did some research,and it seems the talk is whether the barrel is chromed or not. Seems like a bunch of issues. Thonk I will pass on it.

I "just" bought a Super Shadow in 7mm WSM, is there anything I should worry about? I got it for pretty cheap too with only 15 rounds thru the barrel.

If my Talley base/rings arrive today I will definately go out today and shoot it even though its -23 Celsius (73.4 F) here right now....brrrrrrrr!!!!
The rifle came with a box and 1/2 of Federal Fusion 150gr.

Huntsman1, how did that brrrrrrrrrrr 73.4 F shooting day go.
Did you get the rings & bases on?

I have a 300wsm but in a standard model 70 with Lam stock.
Haven't messed with it much for two reasons.
First, I have two 270wsm model 70s and they do everything I want.
Second, well, I just haven't messed with it much!

Been thinking about maybe getting it out and seeing what it will do with 150s for a long range gun, (500yds or farther).
Not that I shoot that far very often with a larger caliber.
I do it a lot with my varmint guns but once in a while I do have the chance at larger game out around 600yds in a large, flat field that there is just no cover at all to be found.
As soon as you step out into the field you are seen from everywhere.
I have taken a few deer at the 500yd mark with the 270wsm but have never tried any farther, and may never try, but it would be nice to know that maybe I could if for some reason I had to.
I feel the 270wsm would do it also, just need to hold a little higher.
Just never tried.

Here's the new $79.95 stock from CDNN and the bottom metal from Pacific Tool & Gauge. I blued the bottom metal with Oxpho-Blue and bedded it with epoxy after freel floating the barrel. I haven't made it to the range yet. I hope to between Christmas & New Years.

I bought a Winchester model 70 in .300 Win Mag about 7 years ago in WalMart for the clearence price of $300.00. At the time I knew it wasn't a top of the line model 70, but for the price, including a Simmons scope, I figured, what the hell. In the 7 years I have had it I carried it off and on rotating with a .30-06 remington 742 and a .30-06 H&R Handi Rifle. I used it twice in Montana, once on a pronghorn and once on an elk. I have killed a bear and a nice buck this year with it. It has never failed me and has become my go to rifle. I did change the scope to a Nikon Buckmaster.
I would not hesitate to use this rifle on anything, it is quickly becoming my favorite rifle.

LongTom, I ended getting her out to the range for a quick cold shoost.
With Federal Fusion 150gr I was just under an inch at 100yds and 1" high. Even in the sub-zero weather I found the barrel would heat up quite well after 3 shots.
Unfortunately I did'nt get to shoost any deer with however I was able to put the final round in a wounded buck at 60yds. Hit 'em right where I aimed between the ears backk of the head.
I recently bedded the action and have yet to get back out to the range since, maybe when it warms up a bit, can't wait. I'm also looking at either another M70 in 30-06 or 300WSM?? or....an SXR in 300WSM...dunno yet..maybe for CHRISTmas to me lol

Hey, good deal !!!
Just watch that barrel heat when it gets warmer, they do heat up pretty quick.
On the bright side, if you are hunting in the winter and your hands get cold,
just blow off a couple of rounds then wrap your hands around the barrel for that warm and toasty feeling!

So I'm giving the Win SXR the BIG ole "X-Nay" as I've been hearing not the greatest reports from others. So I think I'll stick to my original plan and get the M70 "Black Shadow" in 30-06. This exact model/caliber was my very 1st big purchase hunting rifle and I reluctantly sold it to put new tires on my wife's car while I was overseas.
As for my new 7WSM, I just made up some loads with a 154gr Hornady IL Sp and H1000 & R22 powder...but.....the temperature right now and into the New Year is looking like -38 degrees Celsius with the windchill so I might just have to wait this one out.

I did some more range time over the weekend (Jan 29th) and this time I tried 62grs IMR 4831 and a 139gr Hornady BTSP.
My results were .5" @100yds. I was forced to stop shoosting after 6 rounds as my right hand froze numb......Dang Canadian winters lol,

.5", now that sounds promising.
It's hard to get good groups when you are cold.
You feel everything a little differently and trigger controll can really suffer.
If the heat doesn't play a part in it then you should do a little better when it warms up some.
