twist rate for 308 Win
« on: November 28, 2010, 11:54:52 AM »
Ok I am sure this has been brought up 1000 times but I can't find the rate for my 308, it is the older model with a bull barrel and an ejector. I looked at basics 101 and did a search with no luck. Please humor me and let me know what the rate is for a 308. I doesn't want to stalize 165 grain bullets at 100 yards, I had the same promlem with my 243 until I went to 85 grain bullets. Thanks

1:10", it's in the FAQs, use the ctrl f page search as suggested in big red letters at the top of the page in the FAQs, in fact the twist rates are just down the page from the top of the FAQs!  ;D

My bull barrel 308Win H&R shoots 168gr TSX Match just fine which are longer than jacketed bullets.  ???

Necchi- If I knew how to PM I would. Yes I do reload. I am using 165 grain sierra game king bullets over 39.6 grains of IMR 3031. It will clover leaf at 50 yards but I get about a 2 inch group at 100 yards. I had the same problem with my H&R 243, I would key hole any bullet of 100 + grains using factory ammo (Rem.,Win., Fed.). I checked to twist rate against what H&R said and it was different I don't remember the numbers but with 85 grain bullet I got a 7 shot group meassuring 7/16 at 100 yards.

Well Ok, ya just click on a guy's name,,the profile comes up,,then theres a link there to PM, The "messages" is in the green bar on top.
But here it is in a nut shell,,Varget!  :D
And/or run'm a little hotter, short of telling the exact load (I don't like to do) I'm at or just over max and have no pressure signs.

Seating,,useing my COAL gauge, I can run those bullets till they near drop out of the case before they touch the lands on my gun, so I backed up to keeping enough in the case to keep'm straight, about .275 in the case not counting the boattail. There's still alot of leape in my gun but I'm .070 over sammi with the 165's. NO crimp.
And I spend alot of time consentrating on runout issues, I got'm down to .002 or less, bad runout seemed to be the biggest issue with these big throated handis.
